Thought this might be an interesting versus (godspeed Viced hahah). Same age (84, 85), both have famous acting offspring. Both started out in b-movies and a bit of tv and both are nearing 200 IMDb credits - yet have never crossed paths on screen. Dern has 2 Oscar noms, 1 Emmy nom; Don has no Oscar noms (ouch!) and 1 Emmy win/of 2 noms. I mean - forget awards, these guys are legends who have spanned so much and are in all sorts of major classics. Looking ahead, what the hell are they putting in Dern's carrot juice, he's done like 30 movies in the last 3 years, and yet Sutherland is looking tighter with Burnt Orange Heresy, HBO The Undoing, Armageddon Time.... Thoughts? Who's your pick (best or fav)? Underrated perfs? And if you want, whose filmography has the better films...

Great matchup......Sutherland I think is "better" or just in better stuff more often.......even when he's not he's distinct and can be outside himself more I mean he's Gaugin and Bill Bowerman - he's the best thing in Revolution and dies great! for Godsakes But I actually relate more to Dern - After Dark My Sweet, King of Marvin Gardens I love and he's a big part of the reason why.....Even his flops I like to watch him sometimes - I always say The Driver (1978) has elements of Heat in it and one is Dern's Vince Hannaesque "The Detective" ......and I'm a big fan of the play That Championship Season (1982) (never really filmed right here or on TV) and can break down what he's doing there in lots of ways that I don't tend to do for Sutherland as much.

Don. As much as I love legend Dern, it’s Sutherland who I’m a big fan of. Sure, it may bit have to do with the fact that Donald had just got more opportunities, much better-written films but Sutherland’s range usually impress me more, he’s also more of a unique presence to me.
Dern 1. Silent Running 2. Black Sunday 3. Smile 4. The Laughing Policeman 5. The Cake Eaters
Sutherland 1. Eye of the Needle 2. Alex in Wonderland 3. The Disappearance 4. Little Murders 5. Aurora Borealis
Sure, Bruce has "Nebraska", "Burbs", "They Shoot Horses", "Monster" and recently keep popping up in good films back to back: "Mustang", "Peanut Butter Falcon", "Hollywood"... but no question, it's Donald.
Sutherland has too many classics in his resume: "Kelly's Heroes", "JFK", "MASH", "Animal House", "Body Snatchers", "Klute", "Dirty Dozen", "Ordinary People". European filmmakers love him deeply as well: "Don't Look Now", "1900", "Casanova", "Blood Relatives", great turns in good films like "Six Degrees of Seperation", "Without Limits", "Start the Revolution without Me", "Dry White Season", "Pride and Prejudice"... the list is endless...

Good comparison. Both mostly traditional supporting actors, both have a pretty similiar look even.
I really like Dern, but it's Sutherland to me. It's still a mystery to me how somebody with such an prolific output of great performances never got a single oscar nod. He's probably the best english speaking actor (in terms of mother language) who never got a nom.

I prefer Donald as an actor but I have to admit Dern's filmography is much better.

Had to post this new quote from Bruce Dern somewhere - "If you think I’m going to retire so Jimmy Caan can get another goddamn part from me, you’re wrong. I’m out there to go as long as I’m allowed to go.”
Any updates? Sutherland's projects haven't changed since last year - he had some very good scenes in The Undoing and he was Emmy snubbed. Dern was good as well in the new Goliath - he prob won't get any Emmy love either next year - and he's still working nonstop, with a holiday movie and several horrors coming up. More tv work would be a good idea for him, and he's a guy who's appeared on tv for over 60 years! I love his perfs in the two Hitchcock Presents.
I voted Dern here last year but pulled it back - I'm dead even on 'em, at the moment. My tempting toward Donny is bc of that sinister brand of charm he's never lost and his number of strong lead perfs ....Dern doesn't have that (Nebraska, and?) even tho he has countless amazing supporting perfs.

It's fucking astonishing that Donald Sutherland is easily winning the poll (and rightly so) and yet he's the one among the two who was never nominated for an Academy Award.

Great matchup. I always complain about Donald Sutherland being passed over or not recognized enough and here I am not voting for him. Wonderful actor. But I'm sorry, I've loved Dern all my life. Whether it be comedy, drama, or old, random television appearances, he just distinguishes himself.

Bruce Dern
His performance in The Burbs is just awesome and so damn funny and gives him the edge over Sutherland imo (much respect to Sutherland though. Damn good reliable actor all around but I just prefer Dern a bit more)
