Test Screening apparently did not go that well… but what do they know [laugh] Stll pumped for this film. Payne never failed. I take screenings with a grain of salt, but not a single person out of 6 I know liked it at all-- the best reaction I got was a C+ and even he admitted the film had tons of pacing and tone issues Not just them, it got destroyed on Letterboxd, which caused Paramount to shut down the reviews The script had potential, but he apparently revised a good chuck of it, and couldn't quite pull the tone off

I really want it to be good.

Interesting news.
That film is one project where I think it could be terrific as well as terrible. Looking forward to this. So far I like Alexander Paynes work.

Has there ever been a mess of a film that was edited into something significantly better through a lot of test screenings in post? Best of luck to everyone involved, I like a lot of the talent involved and wanted this to be good.

Similarly written off after the first screening, until DuVernay went back and reworked it. I doubt it was a Philomena-type deal, with one person disliking it and spreading bad buzz, because I remember reading from someone who saw both the rough cut and the finish version that the latter was significantly different, and way better. But then again, Downsizing has had multiple people all calling it bad, whereas I don't know if DuVernay's film got that many negative responses.

I don't recall Selma having numerous testings though, just the one. This seems to be more like Joy and Burnt.

You could be right, though, I just threw in the first example that came to mind.

This sounds like a movie that cannot be fixed and is beyond repair (Last I've heard, they removed the needless voiceover which was not present in the script)
Of course new screenings can aid in trimming the runtime down, but that wont be enough to absolve the blandness of Damon's everyman character and the potentially "racist" and "offensive" handling of Chau's character (watch her get re-dubbed)
The script, which had a slew of flaws, had potential to be huge as long as Payne didn't indulge in the condescending farce of the material, but evidently he failed to pull it off

Not just them, it got destroyed on Letterboxd, which caused Paramount to shut down the reviews Huh? I count 23 viewings on Letterboxd with 5 ratings

Still we can't judge on the movie despite the number of screening tests.. It will remain a contender.. And in my opinion it has a big chance to be nominated for best picture at the Oscars & even win it.. Because who knows?!
