Gregory Ellwood @thegregorye Still buzzing from Alexander Payne's Downsizing 10 min preview. That's a movie that would win the Palm. #Cinemacon
Gregory Ellwood @thegregorye 2h2 hours ago Downsizing looks amazingly unique. Payne in almost Kubrick mode. Maybe he is? #Cinemacon
Steven WeintraubVerified account @colliderfrosty 2h2 hours ago The Downsizing footage might be my favorite thing from CinemaCon this year. Looks brilliant on so many levels. In theaters end of December.
Peter ScirettaVerified account @slashfilm 2h2 hours ago Alexander Payne’s Downsizing looks FANTASTIC. A Charlie Kaufman style comedy. It’s my thing. Cant wait to see more than these 10 minutes.

Payne is incredibly hit-and-miss with me. I did not care for The Descendants at all and yet I consider Nebraska a masterpiece. Hoping Downsizing continues in the latter's mold.

Are you now predicting it for BP? Any word on the runtime btw? I have it #2 and always thought it could be big-- I feel like it's a movie that wins screenplay as a consolation and I'm not sure how crowdpleasing overall it will be, but I'm sure guilds will love it so it can definitely win The script was over 150 pages but its mostly dialogue-driven so somewhere around 2hr15 min at most, I'd predict unless it was massively rewritten

Hopefully the draft you read hasn't changed much and this is still epic.

@jayagain dude Wonderstruck isn't winning at all. Haynes isn't loved as such, which showed when Carol couldn't even make an appearance for the BD category, let alone BP, when it was considered to be one of the couple frontrunners the whole time. Had the film won anything at all, or any of Haynes's films for that matter, then an argument for his overdueness could be made, which I could have seen as the only means for the film to be a frontrunner. And had the reason for the Academy to snub Carol would've been it's too 'cold' or anything like it, then it wouldn't have made the appearance it made at all. And lastly, name the last time a children book adaptation has won BP.

And I still think so BTW. And will do until Downsizing or Bigelow proves big. And the predix of any person right now would be for the kicks anyway.

Are you now predicting it for BP? Any word on the runtime btw? Probably a bit too strange and quirky to be a serious contender. Original Screenplay seems more likely.

And lastly, name the last time a children book adaptation has won BP. Nobody cares about Haynes' past or fact Carol was snubbed-- it was a "cold" distant lesbian lovestory and pundits spent all season dismissing it even when it did well with Globes and BAFTA Did anybody care about Tom McCarthy, Barry Jenkins, Steve McQueen before they won BP! I mean it can still make the appearances it did despite being "cold" since the acting and techs hit the important guilds, and industry awards like Globes and BAFTA have tendencies to gravitate towards more artsy films such as Nocturnal Animals And it's more than just a children's book which is a very lazy and reductive term (sure it was Scorsese but it was a bomb, Hugo was the same author and was a top 3 film) It's an emotional ode to silent cinema and it's a film heavily featuring artists and children, which as we all know Academy tends to go for constantly-- not to mention it should be very visually ambitious and garner tons of tech noms As the new ballot shows, you have to be a consensus choice to win and emerge from a festival as a crowdpleaser (a movie like this will be ranked very highly on ballots compared to a potentially polarizing Bigelow political thriller or a satirical sci-fi from Payne), Wonderstruck should do well at Cannes and Amazon will surely campaign it well at Telluride, TIFF, and NYFF before a fall release If the last few years have taught us anything, its to predict the film that will be the least off-putting and most agreeable, and I just see more likability for something like Wonderstruck

Can someone please explain to me this love affair with Wonderstruck? It doesn't even sound that great.

Can someone please explain to me this love affair with Wonderstruck? It doesn't even sound that great. Acclaimed novel from the author of Hugo + + unique structure + Amazon's backing + technically ambitious + homage to silent film + ensemble led by child performances + potentially crowdpleasing It could even have a huge narrative being that the co-lead is a young deaf child actress

Screening Wednesday night. Weirdly the invite doesn't say the name of the movie, (title change?) but it lists the stars and says it's Alexander Payne's latest.
