Yeah it's a little early but it's the 9th already in India and Australia I often say that when you compare his "statistics" (I know, I know ) with any other actor he's almost impossible to beat head to head - lots of awards, strong filmography, very consistent, classics across genres: drama and comedy with family classics enjoyed by all ages. He'll be the guy who will be perceived as "the" movie GOAT imo in general audience terms (whatever that "means" ) not to me - I'm a fan but not THAT much - but his stature is incredibly beloved already and the rewatch value of his films is insanely high. That goes whether he plays a "bad guy" or not btw - no one irl thinks about reasons NOT to love an actor (I haaaaaaaaaaaaate that "he plays too nice" argument against Hanks - that's a reason pacinoyes & MAR maybe don't rank him a bit higher - not a reason that regular people who love him to death don't love him more ). A big year maybe in 2020 where he's very likely to get a 7th Oscar nod for News of The World (no jinx!) and possibly win and he's already been America's Dad as the first to survive Covid (um) and currently scolding those who won't wear masks but in a nice Dad sort of way! Thoughts on Hanks? Favorite roles or most underrated? Anyone looking forward to Greyhound - it's 73% on RT not too shabby at all - maybe we wrote it off a bit soon based on that trailer and it going VOD. www.rottentomatoes.com/m/greyhound

There really is no convincing reason to hate this man. Talented, smart, humble but above all an incredibly wonderful human being. His kindheartedness knows no bounds and he’s a shining example of how we as humans should be treating each other day in, day out. Favourite roles? Hmmm, a plethora of choices.... Philadelphia...... Forrest Gump..... Cast Away. But for me, his turn in Captain Phillips signified an actor at the peak of his craft. And that devastating final scene....the state of shock, fear and uncontrollable emotion takes over and Hanx leaves us to observe and celebrate a monumentally gifted performer that we have been so fortunate to witness grace the silver screen. He’s a treasure beyond words and we’re lucky to have him. Happy Birthday, Tom.

Stumbled upon this tonight and I don't know if I'm just in a good mood or what, but this had me crying.

Love him. He's the best current actor in my books who also happens to be a huge movie star. Apart from maybe Nicolas Cage.

Happy Birthday to one of the greatest actors and one of the greatest people out there! An extraordinary talent that keeps delivering the goods time and time again. I'm biased but still - one of my absolute favorite performances of his is in "Bridge of Spies", particularly because of the way he sprinkles so many humorous/sarcastic touches to a character that a different actor might've played in a more straight way. That's one of my favorite things about Hanks in general - for somebody with a reputation of an 'aw shucks' kind of actor he very rarely settles for sap. That's why I find him endlessly enjoyable in romantic comedies that I've seen. He doesn't go for maudlin mushy acting - he actively infuses his characters with emotional wit and with a sense of humor that truly makes him stand apart.

The man has given many great performances, my favorites being Forrst Gump, Philadelphia, Cast Away.
My favorite movies of his are Road to Perdition and The Green Mile (by far), but I want to point out three of his most underrated films: The Burbs, Dragnet and The Money Pit. All three of them crack me up every single time I watch them!!!

Well unlike my polls, I'll comment further on the birthday thread (um) - what I like about Hanks is how much he can surprise you - at a certain point a great actor has to be able to do that - the actors we rank highest EXACTLY correlate to the surprise factor imo.......if they JUST work their "brand" (a disgusting & vile term) they can never be that great imo. Hanks gets dissed for being "the same" but he's far more detailed within his comfort zone than you might think.
In A Beautiful Day In The Neigborhood he mined that characterization for far more nuance and detail than you would have thought from that script (far more than Zellwegger as Judy too actually) and you would have thought that role was one-note........but not the way he played it.
In Saving Private Ryan he has one of the great scenes in modern film and I never hear it mentioned much - I can't find a clip - where he hears propaganda blasted out over a loudspeaker and his reaction - only facial, no dialog - is one of bemusement, disgust, his patriotism/service insulted.....it's an astonishing reaction scene.

Here's a fun clip from 2018 of him improvising as Falstaff ("Park it, babe") during an unplanned break in the production. Just a small example where you sense he loves people, he loves acting, and loves acting for people....
Love him..... and I was one of the dolts who rolled their eyes at him playing Mr Rogers, but I was moved by that perf, he has several great scenes/moments especially the hotel puppets scene. He's led many movies with a giving, grounded charm. He can play intelligence thru and thru, but he can also play the goof. I mentioned recently (against Denzel) how he's kinda underrated as a physical actor - Big, Gump, Philadelphia, obviously Cast Away, and more generally just how he holds himself and "sees" like that Rogers perf. Shout out to The Ladykillers as his most underrated perf - an inky, sniveling, stressed, hysterical Poe-spouting perf, there's a sadly pathetic self-hoist behind the wordy winking. Also for all ye horror buffs, def check out his movie debut He Knows You're Alone.

Love the Hanx. There's so much to be said about him and his career that I'll just give a shoutout to The 'Burbs. That movie rules.

I'm not a fan, in fact I hate him from every movie he made since Philadelfia. But I wish a happy 65 and 1 birthday, because last year he almost died of Covid. So happy birthday twice Tom.-

Hanks had a good interview with Bill Simmons the other day on his Ringer podcast. I don't care for many of Hanks' film choices and will probably never watch this movie, but he's a smart and engaging fellow, with very little disingenuousness.
