She was astonishing in Gilbert Grape. It's a shame she didn't receive more attention for her brilliant and sensitive work in that film. I'm glad she died peacefully. May she rest in peace

When I first saw WEGG I was honestly shocked to find out she was still around despite her major health concerns at the time. God bless her though, she should have been Oscar nominated for that role, she was heartbreaking. Rest In Peace!

May she rest in peace Yes, I have a feeling that Chrissy Metz from This Is Us will follow a similar path unless she slims down. She'll get parts here and there, but like What's Eating Gilbert Grape was for Cates, I think This Is Us will be for Metz in that it will be really their only significant role. I hate to be pessimistic like that, but Hollywood isn't kind to obese women especially obese Caucasian women. They sometimes snag a big role, but usually they disappear after that unless they drop a significant amount of weight. (By obese, I mean significantly overweight not just "fat".) When I first saw WEGG I was honestly shocked to find out she was still around despite her major health concerns at the time. God bless her though, she should have been Oscar nominated for that role, she was heartbreaking. Rest In Peace! I feel bad because I thought that she had passed away awhile ago because of her health issues. I agree that she should have been nominated for WEGG. Surely they could have taken away a supporting nomination that year from either Holly Hunter or Emma Thompson, who were both double nominated, to give to Cates. RIP. Condolences to her friends and family.

Tough break. She was brilliant in What's Eating Gilbert Grape? and was indeed snubbed of a nomination. She had a great natural screen presence.

I was always amazed by the sensitivity she brought to that character. A truly great performance.

She gave the best performance in the film and was achingly poignant. RIP!

Darlene was the best acting mom I ever had the privilege of working alongside. Her endearing personality and incredible talent will live on in the memories of those who knew her, and those who loved her work. My thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time. Leonardo Dicaprio

Now this is sad. I always felt for her. And she gave one hell of performance in What's Eating Gilbert Grape that will endure. That's a nice statement from DiCaprio ^.
