Kind of going through a phase with this general idea for a bit now - like the Hackman (Royal Tenenbaums)/Lemmon (Glengarry Glen Ross) one - ended in a tie I believe!. Close was ~69 and Streep ~68 (something like that) when they gave these turns - their most recent Oscar nods - Close's 7th nod, Streep's (gulp) 21st. Close became the most nominated living person on the planet without a win, Streep well you know........ Not "who should have won" but what's the actual better performance.... Close The Wife, Streep The Post, MAR "The " THE" Poll - what sayeth thee? ............and yeah Close in general and in The Wife has been done a lot but there's fewer bigger late career female performances and I figured it would be a good matchup......so be gentle on the poll creator thankyouverymuch.

Many a time have I expressed my disappointment with Close's performance in her film. Streep is amazing in hers. An easy pick for me.

Speaking as a huge fan of Streep (if she's not my favourite actress, she's Top 3), I think this was her best performance of the decade and probably her best since Adaptation. She slipped perfectly into the role, and it was her at her most comfortable and gentle, but she still managed to be the only noteworthy thing about the film for me. I actually thought Close in The Wife was a bit of a misfire on her part. With two such horrendously unlikeable lead characters on paper, I feel a little more warmth could have been brought to the screen by one or both of them. I sort of feel like it was more needed in the Close role, but it just didn't ever materialise; outside of the occasional micro flash here and there. The Wife is one of my most loath films of 2018, and it isn't all down to the writing. I wish both characters had died.

Meryl gives her best performance in years in The Post. The phone call scene ranks amongst some of her best work for me. Close is very good, but she’s been way better.

Streep is so great in The Post -- one of her best nominations. Easy choice here.

Streep takes this one, and quite handily at that. Close was saddled with a garbage film and made the most of it, but she's not a miracle worker.
