Figured this would be a good matchup since they are close to the same age - Ali is 46 and Cooper 45 .........Ali has 2 wins in 2 BP winners.......Cooper has 4 nods in 4 nominees but notably no wins......Ali was memorable on TV with True Detective S3 with an Emmy nod........Cooper was memorable once very notably on Broadway in The Elephant Man and gave the best performance of his life on stage (imo) with a Tony nomination. Ali also did theater and has talked of going back.....Cooper may not go back........not soon anyway. Who's got your vote and how about how you see their careers going? Do you see 2-3 more nods for each man .........more.......less?

This is not even remotely close. Mahershala Ali is far and away the better actor. Cooper on his best day couldn't come within a million miles of what Ali did in True Detective, and I think even on his worst day, Ali probably challenges Cooper's best work.

Ali is a remarkable actor. His dignity and poise was the only redeeming quality of Green Book. He elevated True Detective S3. His win for Moonlight is one of the most inspired in the category’s history. Comparably, Cooper has been very good a couple times (Silver Linings and A Star is Born) and for some reason that has been deemed enough to elevate his stature above all of his contemporaries besides DiCaprio and maybe Bale despite many of those contemporaries being just as good, if not better, for longer.

Ali is a good actor, Cooper is "meh" personified.

I think both are perfectly fine, but I'll lean towards Cooper because I see more comedic possibilities with him. Ali is better at more dramatic parts. As far as I'm concerned, both are solid enough, but they're flashes in the pan unless they can get some truly great parts in their niches. Ali in something properly Shakespearean and grave, Cooper in something properly silly and tongue in cheek. Basically, Cooper needs a truly great Rocket role, and Ali needs a truly great role like his character in Moonlight.

Cooper is an alright actor who has one great performance in A Star is Born, while Ali has racked up several brilliant turns and doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon. He also seems to be a far more effortless screen presence than Cooper, who almost always feels like he's trying just a little too hard.

Pretty ridiculous how much Cooper is getting shit on imo. I’m fine with Ali taking this but Cooper deserves praise at least still. He was worthy of a win for A Star is Born, very good in stuff like SLP and TPBTP and also a pretty damn good comedic actor (Ali couldn’t touch him in this dept and could definitely not pull off The Hangover).
