So this was really good, possibly Apatow’s best. I’m not a big fan of Davidson but he really worked well here. Very nice balance of comedy and drama. Some of the subplots ended up not getting enough attention but still a very enjoyable movie.

I liked the trailer but I had no high expectations. Apatow is usually a hit or miss for me. This is more of a hit. I won't call any part of it remarkable but it's entertaining enough. It's certainly very long but it was also constantly engaging, mainly because the tone is not off-putting and the cast is so strong that you don't get bored with them. Davidson is surprisingly fine but the supporting cast is much stronger, in a way that sometimes Pete's character comes off like the most least interesting one on the film. Some of those moments between Tomei and Burr were really sweet. Overall, I was enjoyed.

The Tomei and Burr stuff was great and they added in some nice layers to it. I liked Bel Powley and Maude Apatow a lot too and wouldn’t have minded having Davidson’s scenes with them expanded a little more. Also think they needed one final scene with him and Burr’s kids.

I've seen some people compare this to a sitcom, and it pretty much is the first season of a sitcom trimmed down to 137 minutes. There's way too many plotlines (especially since a number of them go nowhere -- and what's up with the fucking intense drugstore robbery? lol)... and it's obvious that this should've been no more than 105 minutes.
But I mostly enjoyed it overall... I laughed a decent amount and Marisa Tomei was great. Was also glad when Steve Buscemi was finally given something to do since for a while there I thought he'd be wasted.
6.5/10 or so... but could've been a lot better if it was more focused and had a reasonable runtime.

Color me shocked - after having no particular expectations I found the movie to be pretty terrific. And I've finally realized that the over-indulgent (as critics like to parrot) Judd Apatow is the best Judd Apatow. His story-driven high concept movies are good but for my money the looser he gets, the better the movies are - this and "Funny People" being the best of his directorial oeuvre. It's because the narrative is so loose and unburdened by phony plot points that the film feels so grounded, real and human - you really just live side by side with these people with all their flaws and ups and downs. You truly get to know and care for them, even though they can be annoying or weird to you. Davidson's character is of course a very flawed and uneven person but that's part of what makes the movie so engaging since it's done in such a human way. And what I also love about this and "Funny People" is these two movies' relationship to reality, the interconnectedness of their central players with some very real biographical stuff. That sense of interplay between fiction and reality adds a certain layer to the proceedings which just makes the movie feel even more poignant.
Cast MVP: Bill Burr! Such a wonderful performance.
