I was thinking that it's about 3 years for me on here and I came over a little late ........so what's changed for you and how you see the board's personality differently for acting than the IMDB days? Who is someone we maybe as whole overrated or underrated or our opinions have changed on? Is Gosling considered "better" with us in 2020 or did he peak in '16-'17? Gyllenhaal? Would Fassbender be the most noticeable change in opinion/drop-off.........? Any thoughts on someone you used to hold in high esteem and now not as much or the opposite someone who didn't click for you until recently? Or things you thought would happen by now that didn't or that did and you didn't see coming? For me I think I overrated Sean Penn's ability to maintain a career at least - if you had asked me in 2016 - would his TV show fail and he still not have a great film performance 12 years after Milk I'd have said "Nah - he'll be fine the TV show will click and he'll have something in film......." Still love him and his 80s-08 work so I haven't changed my opinion on that ..........but that's 3 years lost when he clearly couldn't afford to lose them in his 50s so that prediction was a miss. On the other hand I was never THAT enamored with Ed Norton - I like him but almost always found his talent overpraised even at his most acclaimed by everyone else - and didn't think he'd be able to maintain his Birdman comeback which was on target as a prediction for right now at least.

Gosling seems to be the reigning king right now (inexplicably), but I feel like he was very beloved three years ago too. Fassbender definitely seems to have fallen off in the board's estimation. I never see anyone talk about him anymore (has he had a relevant role since Steve Jobs?). Gyllenhaal seems to have fallen off slightly too. Phoenix is more popular now too, what with You Were Never Here and Joker going back to back. The latter was divisive for sure but has a lot of passionate supporters around these parts. as for myself, I like DiCaprio even less than I did back then. And I'll say it again, when it comes to 2010s acting, ladies ruled and boys drooled.

Irl I belong to a film club (or at least I used to - it may have been killed by Covid) and it's very casual and boring and the arguments between members of this club on those 2 performances was the most exciting thing that ever happened to it ..........basically it was like somebody took the last shrimp from the buffet or something.

I remember back in the old, old days (I'm talking late '00s) Liv Ullmann in Face to Face would win the "Best Female Perf of All-Time" polls every single time. I think that sentiment has definitely changed... people still love her but not as much.

I agree. Liv in Face to Face isn't talked about as much these days. Most people prefer Dunaway or Spacek for that year - the true board favorites. And along with Diane Keaton and maybe Gena Rowlands, those are the 70s actresses talked about the most.
It was 2011/2012 that was the lowpoint on our forums. So many new dudes showed up, most of them didn't have a clue about films, and changed our board for the worse off. I'm saying MOST, not all. Not including people like Martin_Stett or Viced or some others who I remember spoke out.

The rise of Dafoe who I'm convinced may top his whole film generation as best American actor .......I think Cage looks better now too.....he certainly has his cult at least on here. I think Cage looks better in 2020 than he did in 2016-17 maybe - I was genuinely shocked at how the board received Mandy etc. I vaguely remember Reese Witherspoon causing way more chatter back then than she does nowadays, though that might just be me

There's a sense that her TV work has been diminishing returns (and Home Again and A Wrinkle in Time weren't well-received films), so that's a good 5 years where her only widely-appreciated credit is Big Little Lies. It feels like she's going in circles.

I feel like people have cooled immensely on the Virginia Woolf foursome. And if not, they bloody well should have.
Fassbender's certainly dropped from his lofty position in the last few years. I also feel this board is much cooler on Jessica Chastain than the OG OB.

I vaguely remember Reese Witherspoon causing way more chatter back then than she does nowadays, though that might just be me Witherspoon's thespian abilities aren't good enough to sustain discussions about her. She only gets an influx of talk around her whenever a new hit is released. Wild (2014), Big Little Lies (2018/2019). Personally speaking, I doubt there's anyone here who likes her more than I do.... I think of every strong-willed suburban mother as Reese Witherspoon in Little Fires Everywhere/Big Little Lies. To keep up with this discussion.....where are the Hathaway fanboys? Thank god they're gone, because they were annoying and constantly baiting people to a fight.
