Oh honeys, I finally got around to watch the DVD of Page Eight (2011) which I'd asked a friend to get me from England for Judy Davis' performance (although she's is only in supporting as Bill Nighy and Rachel Weisz are the leads). In the special features section, I was surprised to see Hare say 'he always wanted to work with Judy Davis but that she was always turning him down', and that he thinks that 'there isn't any actress in the world that has the raw power that she does.'
I wonder which of his movies she turned down; The Reader?; The Hours?; Wetherby?

I think she's probably the most underrated actress on this board like all time maybe only rivaled by Irene Dunne (maybe).
If you actually go over her filmography and stage work and see what she's pulled off and how exactly she pulled it off it's kind of amazing. I'm having a hard time ever "guessing" how Judy Davis would play anything at all so when you find out she turned stuff down your mind kind of reels at the missed opportunities.........sigh.
I have to see Page Eight........Gambon......Fiennes.....Davis......!

Oh honey, those three that you mention have too few scenes. Davis has two and a half big scenes, Fiennes just one big one, and Gambon only in the first part of the movie. It's mainly Bill Nighy's gig, who has constant screen time... and he's such a strange, deadpan, emotionless actor, but not devoid of charisma. The English equivalent of Malkovich, for me. Sui generis.
Judy Davis would never have done The Reader as she categorically didn't and doesn't ever get naked... like never! The Hours? Well, that was Nicole, Meryl and Harvey and who knows what went on there...
Her career is certainly been on her own terms. Imagine repeatedly turning down David Hare! I think her decision to refuse to live and schmooze in Hollywood certainly curtailed her career. Also she's the antithesis of Nicole, because in the 90s she said that she'd rather not work at all, than 'add to the crap'. I guess she probably had enough money when she said that, although she did dip a couple of time, later in her career. She said she did Sofia Coppola's Marie A because she wanted to spend time in Paris.
I would have loved to see her do The Iron Lady as she's so good at playing real life characters and would have made a nice companion piece to playing Nancy Reagan.
Page Eight is part of a trilogy (Davis is back in the third part) but I won't be pursuing the other two movies as it wasn't my thang.
