Was struggling with this question myself. Judi Dench and Edith Evans are brilliant but I think I'd have to go with Maggie Smith. the more I see of her work, the more I'm in love.
Scanning the list I was surprised to see Glenda Jackson absent. Found this recent Guardian interview where it comes up.
I’m surprised she isn’t a dame, I say to Jackson at one point and she looks wildly indignant. “I’m a republican!” she says. Yes, but you’ve already got a CBE, I say. “Yes, well.” She smiles, briefly, at her own perversity.
