One of my favorite Lean films, for sure. The casting is so spot on and it's incredibly atmospheric.

David Lean was never disappointing in adapting a great story! I would disagree with that. I don't think his Oliver Twist is very good at all. Agree with everything you say about Great Expectations. It's something else is what it is. One of the best, most perfect book to film adaptations ever made.

I don't dislike it, but I thought it was a really by the numbers adaptation of the book when I saw it. It's a good book so the movie is still pretty good, but I wasn't blown away.

I never expected it so good! it's very smart in handling shocking moments and didn't look cheap. lean was very good to imagine and materialize the situations from the novel. I recalled watching a movie with similar title starring Anne Bancroft,, it's so bad and so much different than this. Yeah, the 90s remake was... interesting.
