I've been rewatching some favorites from my childhood recently. Animaniacs, Beast Wars, Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot, Invasion America, Digimon Tamers (actually early 2000s) and now I'm two episodes into Gargoyles. These shows are AWESOME. This isn't just nostalgia speaking: these are really great, dramatic shows with great comedy, complex characters and plotting, stunning action sequences.
Do modern shows compare? I admit that I haven't seen anything outside of one stab at Adventure Time (I literally lasted for less than two minutes). If not, how did the stars align to deliver so many great kids' shows all in a few years?

Yes, you are correct. Those 90s shows were pretty cool, and I can always go back and watch them and find a part of my old self in those shows.
I think although the 90s were the best period for kids cartoons, they were a bit younger or more kiddie than the 00s. The 00s had a more adult flavor to them, including Justice League which really took Cartoon Network to the next level. It's one of my top 5 all-time shows regardless of live action/animation/young/adult or whatever.
