Well I post about her every third post lately so what the hell ..........a little early but it's 5/14 somewhere in the world. What can I say about her that wouldn't be fawning ............she's giving the performance of this whole year in Mrs. America - a genuine GOAT level portrayal ........I just re-watched her incomparable turn in Manifesto (2015) this week ..........and she's signed on to like a billion films in the past few weeks apparently too. For me, the best actress of her generation. Staggering versatility, a chameleonic style very seldom achieved by any performer working today, and a naturally commanding presence. I mean, she played Queen Elizabeth and Bob Dylan and deserved Oscars for both. Who else can say that?
On a personal note, I took a lot of pleasure in seeing her receive her second Oscar from none other than Daniel Day-Lewis back in 2013. We have been sorely robbed of those two squaring off against each other in something. Imagine a Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf-type project directed by none other than PTA featuring those two.

Happy Birthday to an incredible actress and gorgeous Woman. So many unforgettable performances in an illustrious career that doesn't seem to be slowing down whatsoever. Long may she continue to grace our screens with her colossal talent. I watched Notes on a Scandal for the like the 434th time last night and it will always remain one of my very favorite turns from her (just a great film overall.) Curious on what you think about her in that pacinoyes. |

It's not just May 14 "somewhere" in the world, but the part of the world where she was, you know, born ... so I'd say that makes it her birthday. Happy Birthday Cate! Been listening to a lot of Dylan lately which has only made me gain more respect for this legendary performance which is still the best turn from a supporting actress this century I think...  Might get around to Mrs. America one of these quarantined days ... even though I really don't watch TV anymore ... and the fact that I still don't find the time for TV in quarantine is really telling. |

Happy birthday! Easily makes my Top 10 fav actresses. Watching her is like watching an already sharp blade being sharpened. She's always sparking and fascinating to watch - idk anyone right now who better matches a theatrical panache with psychological brinks. She can play it all and proves it with every new batch of perfs. Just in the last year with Mrs America and Bernadette...... She also has a flashy supporting role in another series Stateless coming out on Netflix later this year...... Huppert riding her coattails  :  |

It's being hyped out of all recognition for some reason. Perphaps because she hasn't had a prestige performance since Carol. She's very good as you'd expect, but this is standard stuff for Blanchett and it'll be absolutely criminal if Regina King's far superior work in Watchmen doesn't win the Emmy over her. Anyway, Happy birthday. She is a tremendous talent. Probably a stretch in the late 90's when I'd put her over anyone in her generation, but she's since become very hit and miss for me. |

Love both performances and the film overall........I used to talk about in the IMDB days that she has one of the greatest single scenes I've ever seen from any actress in it: It's the scene where she's looking at the Siouxsie and the Banshees record that she's playing for the kid .......and she's all wide eyed and almost off in a fog - she says "we all wanted to be her" .........and that entire scene is an allegory because she doesn't want to be herself at the moment - or at least "the good her" - a wife with a career and mother etc. She remembers back before she was an adult and of course the kid is at that age now himself so her delivery of that speech/scene is functioning on multiple levels and multiple feelings - wrong, right, painful, sad, confused, exciting. She is so insanely smart that she finds all these uncomfortable layers and levels in her character arc and in that scene where another actress would blow right past it as a "simple" scene. |

She's more present than DeNiro in The Wizard Of Lies, but it completely plays into her archer and theatrical sensibilities. I felt like she'd already played variations on this character several times in her career to be honest, so it doesn't feel like any kind of stretch for her (like that phase where Julianne Moore seemed to corner a market in 50's housewives). It's a show that wears it's importance (or self importance) on it's sleeve, so it's tailor made for awards attention. But based on what I'm seeing, I'm not sure anyone will remember this show a year from now. But maybe you'll enjoy it more than I am. |

Not a surprise to anyone here, there's something way too consistently artificial to her approach to acting for me to be a fan. I like her in Coffee and Cigarettes, and as Galadriel, and in Benjamin Button, but man does she not work for me most of the time. I think her win for The Aviator is completely insane. I also agree with Pupdurcs on what I've seen in the first two episodes of Mrs. America; the whole thing just seems like a more explicitly political Mad Men, which already felt to me like a sillier quasi Ryan Murphy-esque Revolutionary Road. She's good in it, but not even to the point where I'm inclined to keep watching. Basically, whatever I do love about Joaquin Phoenix despite shitting on him post-Two Lovers is something I've never seen from Blanchett.

I've mentioned before how she nods on negatives - "She will say "No" and then nod in the affirmative (not shake her head from side to side on the word "No") which makes her "No" defiant and vivid and meaningful. It's not just a trick, and it's not merely technical either - it applies to her character and how we see her also.
Note her at the end of this clip - she points forward on the word "Back" - so she is giving you multiple, sly cues to process what she says - "back" means "going forward" to Phyllis - in many ways.
It's quite brilliant and complex acting really......and it plays on a viewers subconscious and on the script. She never, ever takes a scene off - so every scene and every little thing adds up. This is one of her greatest achievements this role in Mrs. America....really can't wait for more people to see it.

She’s truly been killing it lately. She’s the most in demand actress in her age group right now and I can see her winning a third Oscar within the next few years.
