Many critics mentioned the casting of Malkovich as a flaw for the film, feeling that he just wasn't right for the part. Do you think he was miscast? If so, who would you have preferred to see in the role?

I like Malkovich and I like him in this film, but I do feel like he's the weakest link in the cast. I like how he portrays the doucheness of the part early on, but he never feels as dangerously sexy as Close, and I found the redemption arc to be a bit weak/forced (but maybe that's more on the writing). I don't know if he'd be the right age, but I'm thinking Sam Neill could've pulled it off. I like what he does in Possession.
Who would you cast in a 2020 remake?

Malkovich has been miscast in virtually everything, even when he's good.

Ooh, I love your Sam Neill suggestion! I would definitely cast Jude Law in 2020.

Not really. He wasn't bad imo although I another actor might had done better in the role.

Let's be honest. He wasn't good looking enough for the role. I think Gary Oldman or Daniel Day Lewis could have been interesting choices back then. If you wanted a French playing a French character, Alain Delon.

I felt he was more miscast in Being John Malkovich.

First inclination is to say yes of course, but the performance really works. You don't think it will, but it does. Malkovich brings a wonderful sliminess to the character but manages to be suave too and incredibly sexy. One of the best examples of a performance that shouldn't work but does. IMO it's some of his very best work.

I don't find him especially charming or magnetic, either - there is an inherent creepiness about him that's just hard to swallow - at least when he's playing this sort of role. My initial thought was Jeremy Irons (he and Close already had a great rapport from Broadway's The Real Thing), but I know that Frears and Hampton were interested in casting American actors. It might seem an odd choice, but what about... Warren Beatty? pacinoyes

Warren Beatty? pacinoyes I don't buy a lot of the premises in this thread tbh - specifically since when do a males looks have anything to do with who they are able to seduce (?) - and as for his charm/magnetism well I might agree but ........I mean he was good looking enough and charming enough for Michelle Pfeiffer in real life I actually love his casting it makes it more sinister and modern and it was bold casting to go all-American and Malkovich specifically was ill-suited for the role in several ways - there's a video where Frears talks about how he didn't know how to bow or stand even - he doesn't even attempt to change his vocal patterns. But he gives an insanely good embodiment of this character type - in the scene below he is flat out amazing. I always talk about how he is one of the only American actors who can do self-loathing - American actors can almost never try it much less do it - and he does it spectacularly. Also, his loss of balance at the end foreshadows Close's loss of balance at the films end.......there's much brilliance to it. Beatty has the look of the role and he'd be fine too I guess although he has the same problems as Malkovich here and is missing the strengths - he just looks better -.....once you've committed to an American you maybe have committed to a less famous American maybe though no one springs to mind. I'm still on Team Malkovich dammit :

Absolutely not for me. I found him perfect. Incredibly sexy, deliciously wicked. Obviously not better than Close, no one was.

His accent was a little bit off at times but other that, no. He was born to play Valmont.
