I mean with pre-existing music, so not necessarily original songs and scores.
I've been watching a lot of Jarmusch lately and I've noticed that he's really brilliant with the way he portrays music in his films. He doesn't just use it for style, but he seems to make the songs characters in his films, and also as a way to fuel the human characters' personalities. Whether it's Ghost Dog and the Wu-Tang Clan, or Eva from Stranger Than Paradise's love of Screamin' Jay Hawkin's "I Put a Spell on You", he really knows how to make music enrich his characters and you can tell he just has a lot of the artform itself and has a love for many different genres. Even in Only Lovers Left Alive (where most of the music is original), it's a huge part of the main character's personality and the film's themes wouldn't be the same without it.
What are your favorite examples?

Tarantino and Scorsese are the usual go-to guys for this, right? I also dig Linklater, Fincher, and Edgar Wright with their music choices.

I really liked how in Boyhood he used music to represent the time transitions. Coldplay, The Flaming Lips and Britney Spears in the early 2000s, Soujla Boi, Gnarls Barkley and Lady Gaga in the mid to late 2000s, Foster the People and Arcade Fire's The Suburbs in the early 2010s, etc.

Echoing mikediastavrone96 with QT, I think I remember reading that he often gets the music sorted as he's writing the scene and even uses it as inspiration for his scripts.

Russell (his soundtracks for Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle were great) and Wes Anderson to that list. Paul Thomas Anderson also includes some wicked music for his films (ie. the entire Boogie Nights soundtrack, the Aimee Mann songs in Magnolia, the Inherent Vice soundtrack)

Why is nobody mentioning Happy together in Happy Together that's his best one. I like your thinking! Although I do absolutely adore his use of 'Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps' in In the Mood for Love, mainly 'cause I just adore the song, with my absolute favourite use of it appearing in Strictly Ballroom (in fact, I might as well add that Baz Luhrmann's films, although hit or miss themselves, often feature good soundtracks). 2046 also features great use of music. Other directors, whether I like them or not, who have great taste in music: Danny Boyle Nicolas Winding Refn Sofia Coppola Wes Anderson Edit: Oh yeah and I'd be interested to see what kind of soundtracks Abdellatif Kechiche's films have after Blue is the Warmest Colour, which had a killer musical selection!
