On a day for the ladies, let's let them fight it out!
Who's the best acting duo of the films with 2 Best Actress nominations - and Shirley MacLaine is a bad ass btw.

N/S Suddenly Last Summer or Turning Point but side-note on MacLaine - more great female duo perfs with her in Postcards from the Edge and The Children's Hour (wasn't nom'd for either)

All About Eve is the only one of these where both performances stand out in all the right ways. Baxter is overshadowed a bit by Bette Davis but that plays to the kind of role she's playing. Also, no one outshines Bette freaking Davis. Baxter is still immaculate though, and her part is the most challenging. In Turning Point, Bancroft outshines MacLaine by a wide margin. I'm hit or miss with MacLaine. Not a fan of her histrionics and this certainly was no exception. The film itself is decent and Bancroft was a nice grounding presence in it. Feel the same about Terms of Endearment--love Winger, don't care for MacLaine. For Thelma, the clear standout for me was Sarandon. I barely remember Davis at all. Sarandon has the most significant arc, transforming from dutiful houseful to a "fuck the patriarchy" radical feminist and it's just glorious to behold, and she makes the transformation exciting, electric, and totally convincing. I've never been able to love Davis. She disappears next to Goldblum in The Fly, she's outshined by William Hurt and Kathleen Turner in Accidental Tourist, and Sarandon stole the show in Thelma. She seems like a fantastic person. I loved hearing her interview on Maron's podcast a few months ago and enjoyed seeing her on GLOW, but I've never quite locked on to her acting. haven't seen Suddenly Last Summer...
