Incredible and very memorable performance from Julia Roberts (her best performance to date) . Unlike so many people , I don't hate her win , although I thought that Ellen Burstyn and Laura Linney were more impressive . The magnificent and underrated Gillian Anderson (The House Of Mirth) is my winner for that year , though.

I've often seen it described as a true movie star performance but it seemed to have often implied a certain level of condescension, like it's not real acting or something. I dunno, maybe I misunderstand what some people mean when they say that but in any event I think she's properly terrific in the movie. I see a lot of wonderful character building, genuine emotion and honesty here, not to mention the great comedic chops. Very happy that she won and I wish I could give her my #1 spot as well but there's that darn swan dress lady from Iceland!

Burstyn was robbed imo but I like Roberts' performance. Pretty convincing and solid.
(Finney was very solid also).

It's a great performance. Not sure if she's my winner that year right now, but she's certainly close.

Love it. She totally deserved that win.

I like her performance in this film, I still think her win is questionable, but she was perfect in that role, a perfect balance between comedy and drama, a role in her comfort zone but that doesn't seem like she is simply recycling other performances or acting in 'automatic mode'. I even think that she and Finney carried the film, since in terms of direction and screenplay I consider it very weak and I do not think the movie deserved the Best Picture and Sodebergh double nomination for best director.
