A nomination for Rylance would be pretty cool.

Unless Cooper really impresses with Nightmare Alley, it also oddly feels like best Actor is sewn up with a solid top five. Smith Cumberbatch Washington DiCaprio Garfield Dinklage and Phoenix feel like they’ve been forgotten.

Dinklage and Phoenix feel like they’ve been forgotten. Phoenix's movie just released theatrically today, Cyrano doesn't drop limited until end of December and wide in January and we haven't even gotten any critics awards yet. Weeks left in the race.

Not only is it way too early, AMPAS often likes to throw in a left field nominee.

Garfield Dinklage and Phoenix feel like they’ve been forgotten. On MAR it's actually Javier Bardem who's been forgotten .........if that film is as big as a player as people say in usual Sorkin-speak (no one is ever dumb and EVERYONE is the smartest person in the room for ol' Aaron ) ...........Bardem is at least bubbling just out of the top 5 or in that 5th spot atm rather than Phoenix, Garfield or Dinklage who don't seem to have any above the line heat aside from themselves alone......

Yeah, if the film indeed becomes as catnippy for the actors as it seems to be, it's Bardem who can become a threat to get in Best Actor. Although I'm still sticking with the older consensus five: Smith, Denzel, Cumber, Leo, BCoop. Kinda felt that Leo's role might've been too light but these reactions suggest that he's got everything to get in once again.

I'm still confident in the top four being Smith/Cumberbatch/Washington/DiCaprio, with Cooper feeling the likeliest... but what I find very interesting is that with so many late-breakers surging forward at what is ostensibly the right time, we could see someone get Hanks'd. It feels like it's musical chairs at this stage, and someone who is reasonably assumed to be safe could lose a spot due to a passion vote at the right time.

Very very happy with all the DiCaprio love. Boy's acting been really coming into his own ever since WOWS. Nice to see some real races brewing up in the acting categories! The reactions have created hope that McKay has finally learned to balance out that scathing commentary of his with the right panache... Happy for him too!!

53 on MC after 20 reviews 63 on RT after 16 reviews
I thought the reviews would be better for this too after the initial reactions.
I think Leo is out. Dinklage in.

Don't Look Up is likely to be the Jojo Rabbit of this year, mixed response by most critics but beloved by audiences and industry folks. So I wouldn't worry about its awards season chances.

Damn! Leo is never working with McKay again. Bad day for pundits Its looking to potentially be his worst reviewed film since J. Edgar. I don't usually think about critic reviews as much, but looks like Adam McKay once again bit off more then he could chew.

Leo is never working with McKay again. Bad day for pundits Wow! What a day! HOG doesn’t look so bad in comparison now. I guess Nightmare Alley doesn’t either now. Don’t Look Up should do well on streaming with that cast especially Leo, but I think it’s still hard to breakthrough to the general audience unless it becomes a Bird Box/Red Notice type of hit which is possible. So does Leo still get in if it’s still this mixed? Probably, but it’s odd that I feel he might now be fifth fighting for the last spot instead of comfortably in.

I know Vice got a bunch of nods but HoG feels more comparable to Vice than this. Cooper or Dinklage rise.

I think this will be an interesting case for DiCaprio. He usually gets nominated with strong Best Picture contenders. We’ll see if he can get in with a potential non-BP or lower tier BP nominee.

Him and Jesse Armstrong (creator/show runner) of Succession seem to share the same sensibilities and have a good rapport. Perhaps McKay should collaborate with Armstrong on his next few projects from a screenplay standpoint.

I feel like the Oscar win for The Big Short sort of broke his mind, and made him think he could do more. Although I sort of worry we might be past the point of no return in that regard.
