What are your thoughts on his acting? I remember during the IMDb days he was quite popular and most people thought he made acting look easy. Not really been the case since Spotlight where he doesn't seem to be as highly rated anymore. I did think he did some really beautiful work in Foxcatcher thought which I think is his best performance.

He's very likable off-screen, but I think that he's a try-hard hack most of the time and somehow he's conned everyone into thinking he was this great talent because he was in a lot of indie films for much of the 2000s. Still, he does have a couple of strong performances to his name (Foxcatcher, Zodiac).

He can get annoyingly over-the-top (Spotlight, Infinitely Polar Bear) but then he can also be excellent as he was in "What Doesn't Kill You", "Foxcatcher", "Zodiac" and "You Can Count on Me". I enjoyed his work in "Dark Waters" recently, also like his Hulk.

I like him a lot although I think he's a bit more acclaimed than he should.
His best performances imo are The Kids Are All Right, Foxcatcher, Zodiac and Spotlight.

He's a very good actor. I don't really share the criticism of Spotlight. Yeah, he has a couple of weak scenes there, but is pretty good for most of the movie. Even better he was in Zodiac, You Can Count on Me, The Kids are Allright and Foxcatcher (where I actually prefer him over Carell). But on the other hand I think he was never good enough to get a nod from me (can be wrong without having my lists ready though).

His career is basically based on being the thin version of Vincent D'Onofrio and staying in shape......he's less talented but if you think looks don't matter, you're wrong because he got Oscar, Tony and Emmy nods and D'Onofrio just got the $5 meal deal at Taco Bell. He gave the performance of his life in Foxcatcher, he is fine (and mannered) a lot of times. If you want to see him in a nutshell study "You Can Count On Me" - one of his best - but almost every move is a sort of acting students swiping of Brandoisms - and if you aren't looking you can be fooled that it's more than it is.......but what it is, is good enough. Most people probably liked him in the IMDB days because, well, tbh, most people really can't assess acting all that well anywhere. Ever read a thread on acting/actors on Reddit?

When he's good he can be great, but when he's bad he's really fucking bad.

I thought he was strong in Begin Again. He's usually just there, not really a positive or negative presence.

I liked a good bit of his 2000s worked, absolutely loved him in The Avengers and especially Foxcatcher, and since then his acting has been way more affected with a litany of tics and some weird accent work. Since his major Hollywood breakthrough as a leading man he's been getting more active and big characters when his strength has always been underplaying in more relaxed roles.

I've loved his most modest performances. You Can Count on Me was really special and Foxcatcher is the textbook example of how to accomplish a lot by doing very little.
On the other hand, you have his performances in Spotlight and most recently Dark Waters where he comes off as very unnatural and forced, like everything about the performance (accent, facial expression, everything) feels put on. I don't know why he couldn't have played Dark Waters more straight-forward. I kept asking myself, why is he doing that with his face? Scrunching it up to look perpetually sad. It's so unnecessary. He has the chops to nail these roles by doing less.
It does bear repeating that his performance in Foxcatcher is one of the best of the decade and it SO PERFECTLY fit Ruffalo's style sans affectation. It's grounded and profoundly human, the best examples being his heartbreaking scene with Tatum in the hotel after Mark's self-sabotaging food binge and when he's asked to praise du Pont in front of a documentary crew and he's repulsed. Dave serves as a grounding presence in the film, a solid rock the audience can come back to to feel a bit safe and Ruffalo excels in that role. Under the right circumstances he can knock it out of the park. I know there are more great performances in him.

Loved him in Zodiac (definitely my fav role of his). Thought he was quite annoying as Bruce Banner in those Avenger films though (not entirely his fault as that was how his character was written).
Also I forgot he was in Collateral. Overall he comes across as sort of a "try hard" but is serviceable / likable enough in most things. Totally harmless.

I guess it wasn't his fault, but man was he ever wasted in that role although most actors likely would have been.
