I mean both were obviously rambling, self-indulgent messes, but at least Zellweger aimed for a little bit of grace. Phoenix and cow insemination take this (not so-) handily.

I personally didn't mind either of their speeches. They weren't classics or anything, but I didn't think either was horrible...just forgettable.
Overall, the fidgetyness of Phoenix started to grate one me a little, so I guess I'd say his was worse.

Wait what?
Phoenix had a great speech. It was very coherent. I know he hasn’t delivered great speeches in the past and has rambled on, but he nailed the fuck out of his oscar speech.

His BAFTA one was for sure his worst, even if the sentiment was in the right place.

He's fully aware himself this time, the tribute of dearly brother River is heartbreakingI agree, that part was lovely. It was everything that came before it that I'm referring to.

Zellweger's was much worse It went on and on, and it was a bit cliched, in that all she did was basically thank the entire crew and then some. She lost me at certain point, I just couldn't stay focused anymore. Phoenix, on the other hand, made use of his moment to talk about things that actually matter, and that's always something worthy of praise. His speech might have started out a bit clumsy, but I think it was clear enough in what it was trying to convey.

Definitely Zellweger. Went on and on, mumbled even more than Phoenix (which is quite an achievement) and basically sounded like a compliation of all her previous speeches of the season.
Phoenix's was quite interesting. On the one hand, it's kind of weird to think that his Oscar speech is now for all eternity linked with cow insemination but I definitely appreciate him for using this platform to talk about issues that have been important for him for many years. Plus the River quote was very moving. The best moment of his speech for me is when he implored people to stop cancelling each other for every little offense and to instead try to guide them towards redemption - that's a very important message to send to everybody right now.

The cow thing was a little much, but I thought Phoenix's speech was actually interesting and felt sincere. Zellweger just came across kind of phony to me and put me to sleep with how long and rambly her speech was.
Also, Phoenix's shout out to his brother hit pretty hard and was a great moment.

Phoenix's was strange but ultimately moving and ended on a strong note with a tribute to River. Zellweger just rambled.

It was probably his better speech of the Season. his best was Critic's Choice where he spoke very kindly about his fellow nominees and correctly pointed out that Driver shouldda won

I genuinely don't understand why people are criticizing Phoenix's speech so much. It wasn't like his Globes ramble-a-thon, and I thought it was very composed and well-poised. I preferred his BAFTA speech, but I think most people got confused when he mentioned the cow and applied that to Phoenix's general offbeat nature. The only part of Phoenix's speech that didn't quite work is when he stumbled over the River stuff, but he still stuck the landing.
Zellweger's speech was rambly, self-derivative, and aimless. Her BAFTA speech was beautiful and I was really excited to see what she would come up with for this, but it was just bad.

The most bizarre moments of the entire ceremony, and that's covering Janelle's opening number, which says something. Joaquin Phoenix reminded me of: He wanted to cover a lot of ground but maybe there was a more clear and tight way to tie everything up because it was a trip... he basically killed the joyous vibe of Bong's director win and his speech, at one point I thought he was gonna pull an Arthur Fleck on live tv, he was struggling, but ending with his brother was touching, still he did way better at the SAG and Globes. There's a glorious gif of Renée telling to herself -Why don't you just shut up!- but can't find it anywhere , just imagine it After Jaquin's speech, Zellweger probably felt the need to say something more IMPORTANT than repeat her 2004 speech, and came with the rambling, but this one was a total disaster. The entire season she gave weird speeches, I get the Golden Globe, she was probably a bit dipsy, but I don't think she ever said something more personal, as said Dern or Pitt...

Phoenix gave one of the most genuine sounding, emotional speeches I’ve heard an actor give
I don’t even remember what Zellweger said

I never listened to Zellweger's BAFTA speech, but it really did seem like she was pressured to say something that was "important" after Phoenix's speech, and then just kept rambling on with well known people's names. Her other speeches were a disaster too, imo. I forgive her for the Globes speech because maybe she didn't really think she was going to win, but after that she should have had something prepared. I'm not saying it had to be great, but just make it simple by naming the director, the cast, your family, and just get out of there without rambling on and on.
