What are your thoughts on him as an actor? His towering performance in Patton is one of the most deserved wins in history but loved his comedic ability in Dr. Strangelove. Would probably give him a win for The Hustler too.

Major and crucial actor because he (and Henry Fonda) is the guy who set a template to follow first for all Americans like Pacino who then became the one to follow for Denzel ..........and now Adam Driver etc. Everyone copies how he set up his choice of roles and challenges across mediums.
Scott did theater almost every year for a long time, he did more Shakespeare on stage than any American film star prior, he did all kinds of challenging roles and he did great TV work too. From Anatomy of a Murder to The Hospital he was amazing on film - you can make a case for him as the best American actor across all mediums and only a few guys rival him in depth across those 3 mediums - Robards, Lemmon, Pacino, Duvall.
You can even maybe argue him as the actual best actor of the 60s film class and that includes Lemmon and Newman which is a big statement.....in the way some people argue Hackman/Duvall from the 70s film class or Dafoe from the 80s film group of actors etc.

I do not think Scott gets enough credit for playing Cus D’Amato in Tyson. The look, voice & even the body language was spot on. He was a dedicated actor with any role he played.
