I assume Mastroianni would win easily but Gassman has quite a cult so maybe not - feel free to mention other (male) favorites in the thread too - Tognazzi......Castellitto .....

They are very similar to me but I think I prefer Mastroianni.

There are many iconic actors, like Vittorio De Sica, Alberto Sordi, or Aldo Fabrizi, Ugo Tognazzi, Nino Manfredi, who were all great both in comedy and drama.
Between these two, I prefer Gassman, who has a stronger screen presence and a more powerful line delivery.

Mastroianni, very important European actor. Gassman wasn't quite well-known outside Italy I personally think Gassman has a wider range. Being more famous doesn't mean being better.

This is Castellitto who I mentioned in the first post - one of the great modern Italian actors we don't talk about much but we should.

Nope, Me thinks he can't top Marcello in La Dolce or in 8 1/2 or in White Night. You just think he's better cuz you like Gassman more, just as you think Oldman is better than these two actors. I think Gassman in Il sorpasso or Profumo di donna is better than Mastroianni. And DeSica in Il generale Della Rovere is better than anything Mastroianni and Gassman have ever made.

A couple great films for each - The Organizer for Marcello, one of his most smartly conceived performances - a whole generation of American actors copied how he built this character from the ground up in their overall characterizations - particularly Dustin Hoffman who you could see in an English version.
Here's Gassman acting with Hoffman (!) in Sleepers which I thought he stole from some the heavy hitters in the cast. He's great in this scene in particular:

I want to mention the great Gian Maria Volonte which can be fairly compared to those two Titans All time actor - I am a big fan of a performance he gave later in his life (he gave a lot of great ones younger of course too) Gianni Amelio's Open Doors where he was remarkably still and inward - it's a marvelous piece of work - very much an "old man's" performance in the best sense, very wise and controlled and calm - and he was only in his late 50s when he gave it.

Shit he looks very scary, a combination of Joe Pesci's Bufalino and Hopkins's lecter , I still need to see many of his, like Sacco and Venzetti, Mattei Affair, and his cannes winning performance. What kind of movie is that, probably check that one too! It's a straight drama - he plays a judge who gets assigned a case that goes against his views in the facts and on the way others see it .......it's a great role because he so often played men of authority and here he's playing that as a man of authority and great intellect which in a way works against him here. It's a tour de force but a quiet one and unlike most of his earlier work too in how he plays it. themoviesinner may have seen it, I know he's a big fan of him from some posts on here.

I think we should add Totò to the list of the biggest actors, and a special mention goes to Diego Abatantuono (some of you might remember him in the Oscar winner Mediterraneo).

The op should change the title of this thread to be "Italian Actors" He said to add other names. Maybe he wants to do further polls.

themoviesinner may have seen it, I know he's a big fan of him from some posts on here. I haven't seen that film yet, even though Gian Maria Volonte is one of my favourite actors. I've added it to my watchlist.

Like cherry68 above, I also picked Gassman as he was quite versatile and capable of giving a darker, menacing edge to his characters. Still, Mastroianni was a fine and sensitive actor and one of my favourite performances from him, which is never discussed here, was in Ghost of Love, as a middle-aged man haunted by the memories of a past lover (a superb Romy Schneider in one of her final roles). My all-time favourite Italian actors, both of whom made some of their best work in the '70s, would be Gian Maria Volonté and Giancarlo Giannini. From the current generation of working actors, I love Kim Rossi Stuart and Vinicio Marchioni. Volonté in The Working Class Goes to Heaven. Rossi Stuart in No Skin.

Mastroianni, very important European actor. Gassman wasn't quite well-known outside Italy Not at all, Gassman even married a Hollywood Star (Shelley Winters) and worked several times in Hollywood. He was a very famous and succesful actor all over the world, just with Zero Academy Awards nomination.- Gassman was also was a famous stage italian actor, several Gassman movies were based in best sellers, stage plays or historical events that's maybe why Mastroianni is more famous today, he worked more often on films italian with the best italian directors in riskier films. He also he find his Ginger Rogers in Sophia Loren.-

If I had to compare Mastroianni to another Italian actor (even if he became a French citizen), I'd say Serge Reggiani. He was mostly in supporting roles, but I'd have loved to see him playing some of Mastroianni 's characters.
