I’m over 2019 already, lol. Just curious if anyone thinks he can survive the whole year to win a second Best Actor Academy Award.
I don’t know what might be big next year (Mank, Dune, The French Dispatch, Stillwater, etc.), but the good news for Hopkins is I’m not aware of anyone that seems preordained to win Best Actor like with Darkest Hour or Lincoln.

He truly doesn't give a shit about awards anymore, so I doubt it. I'm not sure you can win an Oscar nowadays with absolutely zero campaigning.
Even Joaquin shows up to certain events. Hopkins is a no-show everywhere.

Well I love the guy - he's basically the UK contemporary to Pacino in a lot of ways and even more, the UK's truest heir to Olivier (except he stopped theater so young) and if he were ever to win one more it'd be historic. I say this all the time but with the exception of DDL there is no other male UK actor with 2 Oscars who has a BA Oscar - all the others are BSA exclusively (Caine, Ustinov). It's an amazing part onstage (one of Frank Langella's record 4 Tony wins) ..........on the other hand Tony winning roles don't translate for Oscar wins much nowadays usually......he'd be the oldest winner also.

It's extremely early. Who knows if his movie will survive until the awards season...

Sundance tends to fade well before the Oscars. Add on top of that Tony's aversion to campaigning, the movie not being a biopic and the scary skeleton in his closet of playing a black man one time (the horror!), and he's not gonna make it all the way to a win. Will be a miracle if he is nominated.

The kind of raves he's getting for The Father make me think he's almost certainly getting a nomination,a win is another matter altogether. His lack of campaigning probably won't matter either,he's a legend within the industry and he's getting up there in years,so they may want to reward him regardless. That being said, there's a loooong way to go yet and it's hard to sustain that Sundance buzz.

He's certainly off to to a good start with those reviews, being fresh in voters minds, and with Sony Pictures Classics behind him. But I think 2021 may be finally Bill Murray's year.

Way too goddamn early to predict wins, but the reviews are great, SPC is a damn fine studio and the source material is very strong indeed. Feels like the first real contender of the year.

The reviews are brilliant. Love Sir Tony and am looking forward to seeing him perform with a great role. I mean Affleck won the Oscar and his first reviews came out of Sundance. It's not impossible.

I forgot about him. I was thinking more of Mo'Nique who got raves at Sundance and was able to stay the favorite all throughout the year, but Affleck is a great example too. I haven't voted yet though. I'm tempted to vote yes just because so far there's not really an actor that hasn't won an acting Oscar yet that seems like they could win, at least not yet. I guess only Matt Damon is on the radar for Stillwater or possibly The Last Duel, I think the former is more likely for him while the latter is more likely for Jodie Comer and maybe Adam Driver, but it could be a minor McCarthy. It does have a good release date and Focus Features, but I still think Hopkins might have the edge because Damon has won, albeit for screenwriting, and they like him but don't see to love him as far as acting nominations go. Previous acting winners that could also be a threat: Denzel Washington (Macbeth), Gary Oldman (Mank), Tom Hanks (News of the World), Joaquin Phoenix (C'Mon C'Mon) (assuming of course he wins this year), and Christian Bale if Amsterdam comes out this year. Will Smith also has King Richard which seems baity on paper, but I'm not sure about the screenplay. I haven't heard anything about it, but it's written by someone whose only ever written a short and mainly worked in art departments before.

Well, back when he became a contender for The Two Popes I could feasibly seeing a win because he's the type of actor who feels like a "well, duh" choice as a two-time winner, so for that reason alone, I absolutely think it's possible.
But more importantly, though, I don't get why there is awards buzz surrounding Sundance anymore. I mean, how long has it been since the last time a performance that premiered at Sundance went on to win an Oscar? I honestly can't think of what that might be off the top of my head*, not to mention Sundance premieres have basically been entirely shutout the last two years and had been underperforming long before then. So, I'll only buy any sort of awards momentum for any of these films once I actually see it.
*ETA: Simmons and Arquette in 2014, I think?

Manchester by the Sea was first out from Sundance Jesus, I always forget that Affleck actually won. Seems so surreal in retrospect.

Jesus, I always forget that Affleck actually won. Seems so surreal in retrospect. It also won original Screenplay, senile young man I know that, lol, I was talking about acting specifically. Both of 2017's screenplay winners were Sundance films, too.

I always thought Hopkins would not actually win and perhaps end up as the runner-up, even as far back as I first saw this thread over a year ago (and I do remember it). With MRBB underperforming and TF getting a Best Picture nomination on Oscar morning, conventional wisdom would tell you that Hopkins is probably the frontrunner, but Boseman's death and narrative was the X-factor and I ended up siding with him in my final predictions. Guess most of us were wrong on that one, but it was always obvious that Hopkins could conceivably win.
