As much as I love Duvall, I think the Dresser actors were better that year. Courtenay gets my vote.

Haven't seen Conti yet but of the other four I only cared for Caine and Duvall (in that order). I've said this before but the only truly accomplished performance in The Dresser belongs to Eileen Atkins. In an otherwise stagey film populated by loud theatrical characters, hers was the only one that felt human.

Phenomenal year for Lead Actor - there's also Pacino, Depardieu, Jeremy Irons, Eric Roberts, Walken, Coluche, Ganz. From the nominees, it's hard not to pick the Finney/Courtenay pairing, as their chemistry and stressed energy and heart-ache is so closely woven and brilliant.
Finney, doing his makeup, has one of my favorite quotes ever: "There was a time when I painted in all the lines... now I merely deepen what is already there."
