Who do you prefer. I think Pitt has shown more range but I don't find him to be a compelling leading man for the most part (Jesse James being the exception). I agree with people who say he's a better character actor. I prefer Cruise as a leading man and think his best work being Collateral and Magnolia beats Pitt's best.

Neither are anything major to me but I dunno - I once did a poll on Pitt's best performances and the horrible, ungrateful monsters on this board jumped down my throat with all the titles I left off That means something in a way though - Pitt has done some interesting stuff in a lot of different roles and he's a fine comic actor too. He's more interesting to me maybe because he's so willing to be goofy I guess. I mean Tom Cruise has Collateral and Magnolia but beyond that all he has to me is a whole bunch of movies where he basically tried to deny he was aging.....I can only get so excited about him making someone a lot of money and doing cool stunts.

Pitt is aging like fine wine career-wise (and looks-wise too) while Cruise's clinging onto his action guy status becomes more tiring. Going with Pitt at the moment although I think that Cruise is overall capable of higher highs. It's just that he seems to have dropped any desire to reach them opting for literal heights instead.

Pitt in Moneyball merged grade A acting and movie starriness in a way Cruise never has. In a random movie with a mediocre pedigree, or any sort of action thing, I'd rather see Cruise and his unfailing charisma, but Pitt became decisively a better pure actor than him sometime in the mid-2000s. Cruise's turns in Jerry Maguire, Born on the Fourth of July, Magnolia, etc. are not as impressive as Pitt in Moneyball. That said, Cruise is the greatest movie star of all time.

If you had asked me this in
2005: Cruise
2012: Tie
2020: Pitt
Cruise's progression as an actor has been from Rick Dalton to Cliff Booth. Pitt's has been from Rick Dalton to Rick fucking Dalton.

Pitt by far. At least he mixes it up a bit and still tries to pick interesting projects. Cruise nowadays is just known for doing his own stunts in those MI films haha.

Cruise is much more charismatic and better in the straightforward movie star parts, which is an important measure here because that's predominantly what they've both done in their career. Then I don't think Pitt's done anything that can touch Cruise's best dramatic performances. So Cruise for me.

Really tough one ... Cruise is the more interesting actor, way more ambitious and goes for a broke in a way that Pitt’s never really done before. Cruise also has some staggering highs as an actor that I think are better than Pitt’s heights, but Pitt is definitely the more consistent actor overall who certainly has a higher quality of great performances than Cruise does. They also both have pretty great auteur resumes, especially for “A-list movie star” guys. I’ll give the edge to Pitt because I prefer the direction his career has been headed in the past ten years. The comment about Cruise’s progression being from Rick Dalton to Cliff Booth couldn’t be more on the money...

Big Cruise fan here. Give me the action guy Cruise over fine wine Pitt any day!! Idk, I've said it before that there are very few movies I've liked Pitt in whereas Cruise, be it a dramatic role or action, always kills it. Oh and I'd much prefer Cruise in Fallout to the performance Pitt is winning an Oscar for, but that's just me.

1988: Tom Cruise leads in The rain man 1991: Brad Pitt is supporting in Thelma and Louise 1994: they both star in Interview with the vampire (even if Dunst was better than both imo)
I see Pitt better as a supporting actor (I mean, could he have switched roles with Norton in Fight Club? No) than a leading man, while Cruise has been leading since the beginning of his career.
Interesting comparison, as they've been both considered pretty boys more than dramatic actors, even if both have shown some range. It's curious how they've both been through bitter divorces (a couple each) with A lister movie stars.
I'd say Cruise had a better career overall, but in the last years Pitt is involved in more interesting projects other than action movies.

It was always Pitt for me. Cruise had a great decade (around mid 80s to mid 90s) and then kind of disappeared. A lot of bad choices. Pitt was more consistent throughout his career.

Cruise has a string of memorable roles, performances, movies and scenes. Pitt just fizzles out. Even his performance in lesser movies such as that American pilot movie a few years ago has much more going for it.
I like and respect Pitt and love his Cliff Booth. But compare him to Cruise? .... No way.

Cruise is always a delight to watch but I can't think of a single of his performances that measures up with Pitt's best. Is Cruise ever going to give us as hilarious a performance as Aldo Raine or Chad Feldheimer? Not likely.

Louis >>>>>>>>>>>>> Lestat
Cruise is a little bit too "theatrical" for my taste. He has this tendency to ham it up. Brad had his bad moments too, but I find him more consistent, charismatic and versatile overall.

Pitt is more interesting now, for sure.
But Tom Cruise is never bad. Where Brad Pitt used to be pretty wooden quite often in the early days and can still be bad now.
If you look at Interview with the Vampire that they're both in, Cruise is waaaayyy better than Pitt (though it's partly the role) and it also disproves to some degree that Cruise can only be leading man/himself.
They're both incredibly enjoyable in particular when they do comedy.
I voted Pitt, but if Cruise decided to not care about the quest for eternal youth and decided to throw himself into something really interesting, I still now have the feeling he could do something beyond what Pitt ever could.
And I say that from the perspective that as you might tell from my avatar, I utterly adore Jesse James!

Pitt by far any day. Cruise is an action star like The Rock but can actually act well. His filmography and movie performances since the 2000s have become uninspiring and retreated to action hero roles with the same defying personality like in the Jack Reacher series, Mission Impossible series, Edge of Tomorrow, Oblivion, etc with The Last Samurai and Collateral being the only exceptions.
Since the 2000s Pitt has entered a new phase of acting: iconic roles in commercial ventures like Troy, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, WWZ and Ocean's Trilogy; comedic turns in Snatch, Burn After Reading, Inglourious Basterds, starkly different dramatic performances in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Babel, Killing Them Softly, OUATIH and esp Moneyball; and what I deem soulful embodiment of characters in The Tree of Life, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and lately Ad Astra. Cruise is solid but he is far from achieving the highs and level of versatility in Pitt's career.
Tarantino had both Cruise and Pitt on his list to play Cliff Booth, both are (not quite arguably) the biggest movie-star with magnetic screen presence. With Cruise playing we would get a fun character with the expected Cruise-quirkiness, with Pitt in the role a brand new character is created: one that is calm, radiant yet also menacing and weathered by experience and wisdom.
