1917 got in because OUATIH and Farewell weren't eligible.

1917 got in because OUATIH and Farewell weren't eligible. Likely the case, but this is still a good get for it. If it can get a BAFTA acting nomination tonight, it's going to start filling some of its holes.

While it's clear Tarantino is pretty well locked in and Wang has a very strong shot, 1917 getting in is a nice sign. I expect it to get in at BAFTA as well. Krysty Wilson-Cairns has been getting a fair amount of attention in the campaign, with Mendes bringing her up pretty much at every opportunity, and in a year where female screenwriters and directors are scarcely being recognized and such is being magnified, I really don't think the film can be ruled out here. It helps that it actually is a strong script, with dialogue that feels snappy and Pinter-esque.
Was Uncut Gems eligible? Its absence worries me.

1917 got in because OUATIH and Farewell weren't eligible. Pain and Glory too. This is a good get for 1917 but what did it really beat out for the last spot? Dolomite and Us? Two films that have gotten no awards attention outside acting.

Parasite can easily win this. Adapted is harder but it's gotta be between The Irishman and Little Women.

I saw a few people on Twitter say that The Farewell would've run adapted, so 1917 isn't affected by it.
EDIT: Oh, apparently it's based on a short story Wang published in 2015. So there ya go.

I guess BAFTA could always revive it, but they have other options that they could back (1917, Rocketman) that I'm not sure how much help it will get tomorrow. I'm hoping that the WGA miss, means it's finally dead. Not that I won't be a little sad that Jonathan Pryce missing a nomination especially as he's getting older, and I'm not sure if he'll get something like The Two Popes in the near future, but all season in certain circles, it's been "but the Telluride Film Festival Poll this," and the "Telluride Film Festival Poll that". Sometimes stats are meant to be broken for a reason.

Sometimes stats are meant to be broken for a reason. BAFTA will either clear a lot of things up in Best Actor or fuck everything up beyond sanity. If Phoenix, Driver, and 3 of Banderas/Egerton/DiCaprio/Bale get nominated, we can pretty much narrow it down to those 6 with 5 of them making it in at the end. If only 1 or 2 of Banderas/Egerton/DiCaprio/Bale get nominated, we're back at sea and anything can happen on nominations morning. BAFTA Best Actor this year is the toughest acting category to predict that I've ever seen.

BTW the A in WGA stands for America, not Association
