On the bubble, gets in.
The movie is holding him back imo - the movie is a ~7/10 but it's really minor - the performance however is major by an all-time star. It's the best work he's done outside of Captain Phillips in a long-time and actors will see how it's more than mere mimicry or should.
Having said that I think almost this whole category except Pitt are on the bubble - it's a deep field, so you never know.....

On the bubble, leaning in.
I don't think he's got as much passion behind him as Pitt, Pesci and Pacino, and I can see any of Song, Hopkins and Dafoe sneaking the last two spots, but this feels like the ultimate Hanks "good guy" turn and it does have crowdpleaser appeal. I say he's in, but I wouldn't be shocked if he missed to more passion-inducing performances.

I think it's basically Hanks, Hopkins, and Song fighting for the last 2 spots (though Pacino is still a little vulnerable). I also think the Globes ceremony and speech should really help him out with last-minute votes. So, I don't know, I'll say he's in, but it's Hanks in another good guy role, so it's hard to be confident.

If muryl can get nom for Stay Out of My Crapper, why can't he? Because Muriel gets nominated for farting on screen and Honks hasn't been nominated in nearly 20 years.

I voted for on the bubble, although I think he has a better chance than barely gets in, but I couldn't vote for the first option because I don't think he's a lock like Pitt, Pacino, and Pesci are.
I have Song Kang-Ho as a passion pick for one of the last two spots, and Hanks. Hopkins is still a factor especially if The Two Popes does well at BAFTA. There's also Dafoe who could be a passion pick instead of Song, Foxx as a vote siphoner because of the SAG nomination, and a possible surprise coattail nomination from someone like Alda or Rockwell.
I'll still stick with Hanks even though I had major doubts before, and I have doubts now because he could end up being a lone nominee plus he's playing another good guy, but I don't think this category is as competitive as it seemed just a short while ago. The other potential contenders for the last two spots have even more cons, imo, than Hanks does, so I think he makes it this year.

Yup. Confident that he's in 4th with Song/Hopkins/Dafoe fighting for the 5th spot. If Hopkins gets in at BAFTA I'm going to say he gets the 5th spot. Otherwise, I think it'll be Dafoe and not Song. If Hopkins misses at BAFTA he's done.

He's on the bubble but ultimately his inevitably emotional and adorable speech at the Globes when he receives the Cecil B. DeMille award the day before voting begins will give him the edge on some others.

One position for Hopkins or Song.

If Hopkins misses at BAFTA he's done. What about Jamie ray Foxx? SAG lineups practically never match Oscar lineups 5/5 and everyone in that supporting lineup is in better shape than Foxx, who's probably going to go the way of Chalament last year, Carrell in 2017, Grant in 2016, Elba in 2015 (minus the win). There's no way he gets in at BAFTA so I think his award season began and ended with the SAG nom.
