Considering what a Hollywood mainstay she's been since the 60s, she seems curiously overlooked. She's an Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe nominee for her film work, and of course she was a television juggernaut with 'Murphy Brown'... Her auteur résumé is seriously stacked, too: Mike Nichols, Sidney Lumet, Robert Wise, Claude Lelouch, Lina Wertmüller, Michael Cacoyannis, Noah Baumbach, Steven Soderbergh... Not to mention being married to a founding member of the French New Wave, Louis Malle. By all accounts it was her love and support that helped guide him through the making of Au revoir les enfants, which is only one of the greatest films ever made.

I really really like her. Always seemed to me that she's a natural acting talent. All of her performances come so effortlessly!!
She was marvelous in Gandhi, Starting Over and the Sand Pebbles!

For those interested Bergen is also in the 2020 Dustin Hoffman film which might be an interesting thing - they could be leads/the focus here maybe: They also played together in Meyerowitz Stories. Iirc, they had a very nice scene together but tbh I can't remember if it was actually Hoffman in that scene.. Old age doesn't come alone.

Not so much a fan of her acting which isn't the kind that stands out to me but she herself is rather fascinating in how she carries herself and her complex past personal past in and her relationship with Malle.
But she got better as an actress as she got older which is always good and she had 2 mid-career roles which should have been really great that don't quite click in one but in the other one does - Rich and Famous (doesn't click) and Starting Over (clicks especially the first half). Starting Over should be much more on people radar because of Marriage Story too. Those two roles could have broached far more than what followed in movies.
In those 2 movies you kind of see how she could have been used as a real person but instead she's usually a type - beautiful (especially younger), strong-willed, intimidatingly smart. She looks like a movie star but the movies never gave her much but potential, she was a better fit on TV later imo.

An absolute stunner in her heyday (Carnal Knowledge).
I love Starting Over and she's very funny in that scene where she sings "Better Than Ever" to a bewildered Burt Reynolds. Well deserved nomination.

She is weirdly overlooked. Love her in Sand Pebbles and Carnal Knowledge and I'm sure I've seen her around elsewhere. Need to see more.

More trivia! Bergen was the first woman to host Saturday Night Live and the first woman to join the Five-Timers Club (i.e. actors who've hosted the show five or more times).

Calling all Woody fans! pacinoyes Mattsby - have you guys ever seen this sketch? It's surprising that he never cast her in one of his films, right? She'd be a perfect fit.

Hadn't seen in a loooooooooooong time and am literally cracking up - "She'll see my ribs" - her reactions at the end are great especially. Could totally see her in his ensembles at every stage of his and her career too. He is maddening in that way - I remember one time he said he wrote all of the parts that he played in his movies for Dustin Hoffman - and of course that never happened and he'd have like 7 more Oscars if it had.......

For those interested Bergen is also in the 2020 Dustin Hoffman film which might be an interesting thing - they could be leads/the focus here maybe: ......about a successful divorced mother of two who rekindles love in her life amidst the crazy antics of her dysfunctional family. Now she attempts to convince the stubborn, and comically unfortunate family members to hold it together while they embrace one final farewell.
^ Didn't see this posted (?) but Hoffman for me still in my personal top 5 Anerican actors for his 67-88 run.......not sure how many he'll have left to release...... April 8th deadline.com/2022/02/as-they-made-us-quiver-acquires-mayim-bialik-film-starring-dianna-agron-1234929934/EXCLUSIVE: Quiver Distribution has acquired Mayim Bialik’s feature directorial debut As They Made Us, starring Diana Agron (Shiva Baby, Glee), Simon Helberg (Annette, The Big Bang Theory), Oscar nominee Candice Bergen (Let Them All Talk, Starting Over) and two-time Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman (The Meyerowitz Stories, Rain Main), slating it for release in theaters and on VOD on April 8. The dysfunctional family dramedy written and directed by the former Big Bang Theory star follows Abigail (Agron), a divorced mother of two, who is struggling to balance the dynamic forces within her dysfunctional family as she attempts to cultivate new love.

As a child of the 90s, Murphy Brown will always pop in my head first when I hear her name mentioned. But I guess I'm in the minority here because my thoughts on young Candice Bergen as an actress are not very favorable. Based on what I've seen, her acting was very wooden, especially if you watch her in early things like The Sand Pebbles.
