This board once did a poll with Lange vs. Sarandon and I think Sarandon won.....which was a good poll because Sarandon has a technical quality that Lange doesn't and yet are they "even" really? Because Lange to me is far more fascinating and starry in ways Sarandon's technique could never capture. She's batsh it crazy when it comes to accents - she won multiple Emmys and a Tony when she seemed sort of done - she not only goes OTT, she creates a whole new acronym VOTT (v is for "very", reserved for her and Nic Cage). There is something that comes when you act like a big deal - you get treated as a big deal - and she has that. I don't see her much like Close/Streep - I actually see her closer to my beloved Mirren in some ways - Lange was a fashion model and Mirren used her sexuality right at the start........ and let's be honest men wanted to have sex with them more than their peers that's a big part of how each got to where they are. Mirren has exhibited a far greater mastery of craft but there is something anarchic and about upsetting the apple cart in both of them. They both did it their own way and are almost outside their peers......they are both, as I often say, quite Punk Rock

I think she's wonderful, and a bit underrated in these parts. Love her 80s slate (especially Frances, Tootsie and Country), and she was always the best thing (maybe only good thing?) about AHS. Not sure if she'd ultimately make my top 100 either if I ever get around to making one which I probably won't (but if I did there'd be a lot of recent up-and-comers in there like Ronan and possibly Stone and you better believe Weisz would be near the top), but I do love me some Lange.
As for her histronics... I don't know? I know her perf in Frances is divisive but for the life of me I never understood why. It wasn't the first performance of that kind to depict a troubled histronic personality and it was hardly the most histronic. I thought she was devastating in the picture. She really brought life to the idea of an oppressive world closing in around you. It's a deeply disturbing and powerful film and almost solely because of Lange and Stanley and has practically nothing to do with Clifford's directing. It mirrors The Accused in that way.
edit: ftr I haven't seen Blue Sky yet and I know that one's way more divisive than Frances. But I also don't think she's histrionic in Music Box... if anything she was too subdued in that one.

I wouldn't say she's equal to Close or Streep, or maybe Sarandon. But she's very very close imo.
One of the best actresses of her era definitely.
Loved her in Tootsie, Blue Sky and in three remakes: The Postman Always Rings Twice, Cape Fear and the TV movie of Streetcar. Vivien Leigh's performance in the 1951 film is one of the best I've ever seen but Lange also did a great job. Her DuBois was charming and passionate and sensitive.

Another quality I really admire her for!
