Of her vast character portrait gallery, which do you feel is the most "overlooked" or not counted among her best ( Sophie, Prada, etc.) and should be? My choice is Karen Blixen in Out of Africa (and yes, I love the film too - it's just so majestic). Perhaps her most relaxed and natural performance - so sexy and romantic. OMG, Meryl. Sorry... It's just a knee-jerk reaction for me.

Postcards From The Edge - she's relaxed and lived in, but it also gives her a chance to use the full range of skills - she's sexy (and uses it for the character usually that is something to conceal or suppress with Streep), she sings (!), she has addiction issues, plays with actor narcissism for her character, she gets to act opposite major and diverse stars - Maclaine, Quaid, Bening, Hackman, Dreyfuss - she's ruefully funny, and on the surface somewhat unlikable.
She never forces it or lets technique dominate what she's doing and there's a lot of technique to mask here. She's amazing in that film and obviously acclaimed but to me it's near the top and one of her most approachable roles.....

Oh, I love this choice, pacinoyes - one of the greatest performances of the 90s in my mind - second only to Anjelica Huston in that year's group of nominees. In a world starved for shining stars, thank goodness for Meryl.

^^^ Ditto on The River Wild. Streep was legit badass in that underrated/intense 90s film.

The Hours.
I feel she always gets overlooked for this one, when everybody talks about Kidman. But I think Streep was much better than her and I'd probably rank this among her top 3 or 4 performances personally.

No mentions yet of her amazing animated voice work as Bart Simpson's nothing but trouble little girlfriend, Jessica Lovejoy, in The Simpsons ("you're baaaaaaad Bart Simpson!") or this tour de force where she's at her most Meryl Streep..........

She-Devil
Her days of 1982-1995 are long gone. I remember in 2002 she was still a main player on the awardscircuit and still a very important person. One of the few once greats who's just been mailing it in since 2002. (Jessica Lange still did great stuff after) 1982-2002 was a pretty good run though.

I know it was nominated for an Oscar, and that it has its detractors here, but I love her in Doubt and I feel like it's often considered low-tier Streep. I think she's steely and commanding, but also gets more and more vulnerable as it goes.
And also The Hours, which I think gets overlooked because it's under the shadow of Kidman and Streep's cooler/better performance in Adaptation.

No mention yet of Death Becomes Her???? I was actually gonna mention that. I absolutely enjoy that movie so much, and find it to be her funnest performance period. I like it when Streep does something crazy, and decides to let it all go.

I'd prob go She-Devil too... proto-Death Becomes Her which I don't think is underrated bc it's such a popular and cult favorite. She-Devil she's hilarious, full of energetic fits, a little dippy and self-doubting, clumsy, and flirty, and really sexy too... Other non Oscar nom'd perfs I like: Marvin's Room which'd be my answer on another day, she's the MVP. Keaton is good but Streep gets the biggest arc and she's convincing and quite affecting. Heartburn is a crappy movie but Streep alone, playing an utterly flustered mother, gives it a pulse and makes it engaging and a bit tense. Manchurian candidate, sort of good fun to see Streep playing such a perverse part, some would say Hillary from Hell....

August: Osage County. I know she (barely) got an Oscar nomination for it, yet many consider it her worst performance saying it's too hammy. In that role, how can you be anything other than hammy?
