Does anyone else think he gives one of the best performances in the film. I think he was better than Baldwin and gave him third behind Lemmon and Pacino. He looks completely out of place in that office full of sharks and he gives one of the most naturalistic performances in the film.

I basically consider GGR to be one of the finest acting ensembles ever in American film - so in that amazing cast I don't rank him as high as you but those dudes are all perfect to me anyway.
His part (George Aaranow) often gets messed up in the play - because he's bullied by Roma, Moss, Williamson and in some ways Levene too indirectly but at each point, he's bullied in a different way, for a different purpose or reason and reacts differently each time. It is a very tough small part and I've seen the play a lot on stage where the actor playing George totally gets lost and disappears and it hurts the whole production - he's a connecting thread in the whole piece.

Honestly, for me Baldwin steals the movie. I don't even think he's ever been that effective in a lead film role, and he's basically only got one extended scene. But rarely have I seen better use of limited screentime. His monologue just rips the guts out of the movie. It's the one everyone remembers, the one acting students use for scene study.
Shame the rest of his film career never compared to his potential here, though he obviously did some fine film work.
Arkin was good. Very Arkin-y. Don't think he stood out from the rest of the ensemble though.

I flat out love the scene where he just storms out the office after the interrogation. Even little scenes when asking Pacino if the leads were insured are brilliant to me.

I meet Gestapo tactics!
Great performance. One out of many in this film.
