Interested to see what we all think.

I'm on neither side, and that's the point of the film, I think. On the surface, Nicole has more of a case because Charlie cheated on her and he refused to consider anything that might benefit her in terms of anything that didn't involve his personal life, but Charlie also pointed out that Nicole had been frosting him out before he slept with Mary-Ann (was that her name?) and that there wasn't any communication. Both sides had good points, but both parties were also complicit in the collapse of their marriage.

Nicole, no doubt. Cheating on your spouse + basically ignoring her wishes/desires = me absolutely finding Nicole more sympathetic in the film

For real, though, I took most of what Charlie and Nicole ever said about each other in that fight with a grain of salt. Even if everything Charlie said about her was true, his cheating easily outweighs all of that for me.

Which is fine, but it's interesting that the film doesn't treat that infidelity on the same level as Nicole feeling her career and desire to grow as an actress were being stifled.

I thought Baumbach overwrote the Driver part to such an extent that I got further and further away from him the slicing, the singing, the untied shoelace! he just wasn't my kind of guy or similar to anyone I know and I totally and more directly got Nicole's POV. The best line in the whole ridiculously wordy script is "I got small" from her - 3 little words that wrecked me far more than his dramatic set pieces. I don't think he could really write the male role honestly actually, he fell into writer formula for me with Charlie telling her he wishes she was dead and then crying over it on the floor - .....the exact opposite of what I thought would happen in his writing.

Nicole blindsided Charlie and played him dirty with the divorce thing, but I think I'm easily on her side as far as their marriage goes.

Nicole had to play some dirty cards at first, but I'm on her side. But if you ask me if I left the movie hating some people, yeah, I did ( the woman that gaves Nicole the lawyer card )

Nicole deciding to stay in LA permanently was a dirty card and you could feel Charlie was starting to loose contact with his son (Halloween night, no hug at the end, wanting to stay with his mother etc).
But he cheated on his wife so I gotta go with her side.

But he cheated on his wife so I gotta go with her side. Yeah I’m pretty unforgiving of the cheating, but reading other people’s reaction to who they might have had more sympathy for, I’ve come around more to thinking they’re both equally terrible because they pointed out that Nicole planned from the beginning to essentially parentally kidnap Henry by moving to LA and already deciding way ahead of time that she wasn’t going to return to New York. That’s one of the worst things that I think a parent can do to another parent. Sure Charlie cheated and was a took Nicole for granted, but he was a good father. I guess I didn’t really think about it at first because of the cheating, and how I could see why Nicole wanted freedom, but still it’s wrong to just leave to another state with any children in the marriage and plan to stay in that other state forever.

I think Baumbach tried to make us pick the side of Charlie all the way through the movie and balanced it with him cheating on Nicole. On the other hand, they decided to divorce and she left for LA without being sure he cheated on her. If the cheating wasn't there, I'd definitely take the side of Charlie.

They both did bad things and made mistakes which is usually why marriages collapse. Although her taking the kid to the other side of the continent was the worst thing either of them did. I get mad at someone who cheats when the marriage is okay and it's just about selfishness and lack of impulse control. But their marriage was already in tatters (they said they hadn't had sex in over a year and were sleeping in different beds when the affair started) so I really don't see the big deal or how it automatically makes him "the bad guy". It's still bad but it was just one more bad thing in the marriage. Even if he doesn't cheat they're still getting divorced. So ultimately I'm not on a "side". Honestly none. Who the fuck does coke other than Jordan Belfort when they have a kid Also agree with this. Getting drunk at a party or doing a little weed isn't such a big deal but you shouldn't be doing hard drugs when you're in your 30's with a kid.

I think one of the things the movie did well was getting me on his side early on and then getting me to switch to her side as things developed.

Ppl are actually taking this bitch’s side? 10 people are. The majority side with the sympathetic, wronged, independent woman.
