Yeah, really good start for Knives Out,even if its opening day number was inflated by those weekend previews. Queen and Slim over performing too.

Yeah, really good start for Knives Out,even if its opening day number was inflated by those weekend previews. Queen and Slim over performing too. I'm seeing it tomorrow, so I don't know if this is in any way realistic. I think that Universal did a great job of marketing it, but I wonder if they would have moved it to August since BlacKkKlansman, The Butler, and The Help all opened that month and did well if it would have got awards traction like those films did. (I know The Butler missed at the Oscars, but its awards haul will still be better than what Queen and Slim's is.) At the very least, if it would have been able to build buzz earlier and opened like it has, I think Jodie Turner-Smith would have been in and perhaps even been able to win since Renee Zellweger feels like weak frontrunner, imo, because she's already won before and hasn't really done anything of note since her last win.

I'm not sure about August, since the movie has more of a gritty realistic vibe that wouldn't jibe with the same people who saw The Butler and The Help. I do agree with you about Oscar buzz, however I have the feeling that the film wasn't going to get much in the way of nominations to begin with. Seems like one of those movies that's destined to be "slept on", and only gain appreciation much later on. Given that its budget is only estimated as being 17m, doing around 13m for the five day weekend is actually solid. It's a lot better then I expected it to do.

Jesus, how is Joker still in the top 10?! That's gotta be some sort of record for an R rated movie.

Excellent for Knives Out. It's going to open with more then the 40m it was projected at. Also that's a fantastic drop for Neighborhood. Great to see two original films,Knives Out and Queen and Slim, doing so well after a dire few weeks at the BO.Last Christmas is putting up a bit of a fight too,its made $31M so far.Not dazzling, but not a disaster either.

It could have done so much worse.

What gives? Five day weekends generally result in harsher Sunday drops because showings and screenings are much higher due to schools being closed, so Saturday is a bit like Sunday, and Sunday is more like Monday for example.
