I was watching Ford v. Ferrari yesterday, and it got me wondering. Both are big movie stars and probably the two recent American actors that come to mind when you think "everyman", but I couldn't shake the sense that Damon might be as good or better in every facet of acting. Am I being unfair to Hanks here?

Matt Damon is the blandest actor alive. To call him vanilla is an insult to a lovely, pleasant flavor. He doesn't have any performances to his credit that, in my opinion, could even contend with Hanks.

He's fine in it, but I don't think he really does anything to elevate the material. Damon is basically antic clay; a skilled director can use him to good effect (the Coens here, Soderbergh in The Informant!), but I think when left to his own devices, he's an incredibly staid presence.

I think when Damon is inspired, he can be great as is the case with stuff like The Martian or The Informant! but that inspiration does not come to him as much now as it did when he was first bursting on to the scene in stuff like Good Will Hunting and The Talented Mr. Ripley (also wanna give a shout-out to his Dogma performance). I think his tendency to go for everyday man roles is his undoing, since he tends to downplay him and he does not have enough inherent charisma to be compelling in that mode. More confidence men and strong types, less We Bought a Zoo or Downsizing.
Anyway, Hanks by a nautical mile. Even if I only consider Damon on his best day, he isn't nearly as inventive, emotionally raw, or as in tune with the greater machinations of a film as Hanks is. That last point I think is where Hanks is in the top .1%. You can put him in anything and he will match the tone of the production and ensemble perfectly, which is what makes him such a terrific viewpoint character.

Tom Hanks by far 😍
THE TALENTED MISTER RIPLEY aside, I've never found Matt Damon that captivating.

Hanks is in my Top 10 actors of all time. Damon is not in my Top 100.

Matt Damon is one of my favourite actors, and has been for about twenty five years, but Hanks for sure.
