David Fincher to executive produce a 'Chinatown' prequel series for @netflix that would follow a young Jake Gittes. Original scribe Robert Towne has been hired to write the pilot. t.co/75UQjhqjF9

Well in some ways Chinatown has a prequel that we never see - the story described in the movie of the young Jake being a cop in Chinatown (and the people we see in the film that he knew then). It also had a built in sequel where oil replaces water that didn't work in The Two Jakes .......it's nice that Towne is involved but the magic of Chinatown is impossible to replicate.
I'll check it out though, out of curiosity definitely.......I got burned by not watching Fargo the TV show for a long time because I thought it could never worked and seasons 1 and 2 were f'n fantastic, so ya never know.......

I'd rather it be a complete reimagining of the story rather than trying to hew close to the film.

Can't they just collaborate on a noir that has nothing to do with Chinatown? I never thought there was anything particularly juicy about the events preceding Chinatown from Jake's standpoint, like it's A New Hope or something. It just kind of looks desperate for IP cred.

I mean, I like Fincher but... a Chinatown prequel??
What are they thinking?

Considering Fincher is my fav director and I loved Chinatown, count me in! For those that are sorta bummed by the news and are skeptical/on the fence, check out Fincher's Netflix series Mindhunter. Its top fucking notch stuff. I have no doubt that David Fincher will deliver the goods and it doesn't seem like a cheap cash grab either.
I wonder who they will cast.

These muthafuckas are getting brave!
Trust, me....they are testing the waters here to push out new Godfather content. Or a Citizen Kane sequel.
In a world where established IPs like Terminator and Charlie's Angels are failing, no IP is considered untouchable any longer. They have to try everything. The vaults of Hollywood are going to be raided for even the most esteemed films as useable content.

Here's a narrative for ya. Nicholson gets jealous of the success of his peers. He not only yearns to come back to act he gets himself cast and goes through the cg deaging process for this role, so he can claim to stand on equal footing as Al and Bobby.
