Driver isn't winning bro. Stop being deluded already When he wins the Oscar, it will be like a delusion. Yes for you, since he isn't winning

so it looks like Nyong'o and Sandler might go the way of Collette and Hawke. Part of me wonders if the reason the regional critics go out of their way to award performances like this is precisely because they (like many of us a few months ago) don't expect them to resonate as much with the industry voters and just want to see them win something. Like, they might have been less willing to vote for someone like Phoenix or Driver if they know those two are going to be battling it out at all the precursors if they thought passion picks like Sandler and Nyong'o would be left out of those conversations. Otherwise these noms are relatively what I expected. - I thought Two Popes would do well here and they did. - That supporting actor lineup is going to be our Oscar lineup - Marriage Story didn't take a hit at all (Baumbach's scripts have always eclipsed his directing) and will probably take the screenplay win and yeah, possibly BP too - Parasite has proven (unlike Lupita and Sandler) that its popularity transcends regional critic buzz and will only keep going up from here. Little Women took a slight hit but it's been blown out of proportion. If the HFPA had two screenplay categories she definitely would have been here. Pugh, ehhh she's still fine. I still think she's nominated, and right now she's in a much better position than Bening and Bates. What's surprising is it getting iced out of BP, but something had to be snubbed. This is just too crowded a year. I'm still pegging it for BP and screenplay nods at the Oscars (possibly Ronan too, who wasn't left out here) and for SAG and WGA nods. I still think Little Women is fine. The one that took the hit was Hustlers. If it was going to succeed anywhere, you'd have expected to see that here. Nothing for the screenplay, no Wu, and no comedy BP. I think its chances at any noms sans Lopez are mostly over. I still think Marriage Story is probably done for BP; although, a lot of it still hinges on whether Mendes is strong enough to beat both Scorsese and Tarantino. Still it did get the most nominations of any film today, so even though missing Director was very disappointing, I hope you're right about it still having a chance in screenplay. Nothing against Tarantino, but 3 screenplay wins + maybe BP and BD wins seems excessive especially when I found OUATIH's screenplay the weakest part and with Scorsese only having one BD and BP win. It will probably never happen, but my dream would be if Baumbach won screenplay, and The Irishman and OUATH split BD and BP. I guess I'd rather have Tarantino win BD, so he can finally win that category and because I do applaud the direction of OUATIH, and The Irishman still won the top prize of the night. I agree about the supporting actor lineup. I thought they would mix it up some, but this seems pretty set now with Pitt plus the two The Irishman actors probably showing up everywhere else now. I thought that they would snub Hanks for at least Dafoe since they really like Dafoe the last few years, and because Hanks will be there anyway, but they must have really loved Hanks's performance, so he's probably in. The Globes revived The Two Popes, and it will probably pretty much follow Philomena's trajectory except with a supporting nomination to go along with actor, screenplay, and picture.

OUATIH for Best Comedy, Phoenix, Renee, Awkwafina and Pitt all seem like virtual locks. Dern is close, but can’t discount the Globes pulling a Globes with JLo. The rest are up in the air. Do you think Philipps could get a DGA nodm

I'm predicting Johansson. Yeah, I think Actress may be where they throw their usual curveball. It could be supporting actress, but Hustlers not only missed C/M, but also in a wide open C/M actress field. I don’t think they liked it much.

Oh I still think Dafoe might crack the Oscar lineup because he's got a great recent track record of sole nominations for artsy projects so I think the voters just really love him (and who wouldn't?). If anyone steals that 5th spot from Hanks or Hopkins, it's going to be Dafoe. But I don't see both Hanks and Hopkins missing and right now I'm predicting both. This seems like a similar situation to last year where the Globes and Oscar lineups match 4/5 (although it might be a perfect match this time, like with the supporting actress lineups in the 2016 season). If Hanks or Hopkins miss, it won't be by a lot, just like Chalamet was almost certainly in 6th place last year.

I don’t think they liked it much. It's kind of weird to me that people (rightly) doubt that DiCaprio will stroll to a 4th Globe win and then go ahead and think Zellweger is winning her 4th anyway. She might, but she's faced with a real challenge in Johansson here.

You don’t think DiCaprio or Murphy got Musical/Comedy? Don't see DiCaprio (already a three-time winner) winning over two guys playing beloved real-life performers in biopics. Think it's between Murphy and Egerton, and I'm picking the latter because his is the more popular film. Murphy is the bigger star, but I did say awhile ago that I thought Egerton could win if they didn't go with Leo, although at that time I thought it was because OUATIH would be in Drama, lol. I agree with mattfincher though that Leo winning along with OUATIH winning Supporting Actor, Best Comedy/Musical, and maybe Directing and Screenplay might be too much for this group. Plus Egerton sort of gives off Aaron Taylor-Johnson vibes to me. I know it wasn't the only factor in AT-J's win, but sometimes Globes like to be the first big group to recognize a future awards favorite, and with Egerton having the Kingsman films and now Rocketman under his belt, maybe the Globes give one of those type of wins. They also love it when stars wine and dine them, and Elton John and Egerton did exactly that. They also love musicals, so they might like Rocketman more than Dolemite Is My Name. ETA: That's also why I'm thinking that de Armas could surprise. They usually do go with the performance that has a better chance at an Oscar nomination which would be Awkwafina, but I'm not really sure if Awkwafina gets a nomination even if she wins the Globe because the Drama side is way stronger. de Armas just fits the young starlet mold that they might not only want to nominate but award early on in their career like Zellweger for Nurse Betty, Jolie before Girl, Interrupted, Blunt during her big breakout year, etc. 1. Marriage Story is stronger than Judy 2. Scarlett Johansson is (now) a bigger star than Renee Zellweger 3. Zellweger already has 3 Globe wins from 7 nominations. Johansson has 0 Globe wins from 5 nominations, and could be seen as due If Phoenix is really beating Driver (which he logically should), I can see Johansson looking like a good place to reward Marriage Story. She's as much the face of the movie as Driver is, if not more so because she's top-billed. I know Zellweger is being seen as the frontrunner for the Oscar, but I think the pundits made up that narrative partly because they're biased against Johansson. Between Johansson-Zellweger, I'll say its 60-40 chances. If Johansson had been nominated for Supporting Actress too, I would be very tempted to predict her to surprise in Best Actress since I don't see anyone besides Dern or Lopez having a chance to win Supporting Actress. She missed that nom though, so now I'm back to thinking Zellweger probably wins again. Still you really make me want to predict Johansson for the win because I feel that pundits have been biased against her too.

If anyone steals that 5th spot from Hanks or Hopkins, it's going to be Dafoe. But I don't see both Hanks and Hopkins missing and right now I'm predicting both. I believe 3 consecutive solo nominations would be unprecedented (and I agree, for Dafoe, it's possible). If this Globe lineup is the Oscar lineup, Pacino, Pesci, Hopkins, Hanks - and Pitt it would be the cruelest acting loss for Pitt that I can remember, even crueler than Close last year - two 80 year olds with Oscars........1 60+ year old with 2 Oscars and Pesci a 76 year old with an Oscar who walked away from the industry for 20 years basically and isn't coming back. Meanwhile, the biggest movie star on the planet maybe who had an amazing year and is without an Oscar is in a pic that's getting ~10 nods........if Pitt doesn't cakewalk to an Oscar win it will be just so baffling.........

I agree that things have been perfectly set up for Pitt to win, which makes me nervous. Things are rarely as simple as they appear.

Damn, nothing for Uncut Gems? Not even a nod for Sandler? I thought it’d do better after its performance at the Critic’s Choice awards.

Having just seen the film, I'm very thankful to these folks for nominating Blanchett! Such a good call for an undeservingly maligned film.

Haven't been following the season at all due to work. I'm just happy that Meryl Streep is nowhere to be seen this year.

I know they already covered Streep with a nomination for Big Little Lies, but she’s their favorite and it’s not like Bening is a super big star that would make more people watch the Globes. I’m not sure if that means they really hated The Laundromat and Little Women, or that for some reason they really liked The a Report. I mean I liked it well enough, but I don’t think it’s that accessible, and while I liked Bening, she’s like Dern and Lopez to me in that she’s fine but doesn’t particularly get to do much.

The "Honey Boy" director Alma Har'el is being pretty vocal about the Globes not nominating the female directors again and I just can't help but think of it as bullshit. The main point being: nobody is owed a nomination for anything. This line of thinking that 'we females made some very good and successful and beloved movies this year therefore we were snubbed' doesn't really work because males also made some very good and successful and beloved movies. It's just some group's picks of favorites of the year and I think it's pretty silly to suggest that there's some form of bias or hate against female directors from the HFPA - they voted for what they liked the most. And this attitude of 'we (I) deserved it just as much' is weird. She calls them out of touch and all the usual names which begs the question: if they suck so much then why do you even care? It's all simple really - everyone wants that nomination. And as far as being out of touch...I dunno, that Todd Phillips nomination suggests that they're holding their finger on the pop culture pulse pretty firmly

The only one that had a chance was maybe Gerwig.

Unless they gotta nominate female directors for being female. I dunno, I just don't see it as any sign of malice or inherent vile bias or something. They nominated what they liked, big friggin deal. The only points on which I agree with Alma Har'el is the abundant gifts the studios are pampering voters with. But even that is such an old part of the game. And that's what it is - an awards game, nothing more, nothing less.

The artists complaining is one thing - but this quote from the Variety article is particularly chilling - how do you all like this world we live in now......yes by all means let's have the advertisers weigh in and lets go with that Smith (founder of USC's Annenberg Inclusion) said “external pressure” has been effective at sparking change within these groups, and added pointedly: “The advertisers should weigh in.” The Golden Globes air on NBC.
