They nominated Cate Blanchett for that forgotten flop Bernadette. So Globes. They seemed a little more random than usual. I don't even follow the television side that much, but there was a lot of complaints in the chat room I was in during the nominations about who and what they snubbed on that side. For the movie side, -Bening getting in over Pugh, Zhao, and Johansson?!? -Roman Griffin Davis being the only acting nominee for Jojo Rabbit?!? I figured they'd resort to nominating Will Smith for Aladdin since they usually hate to nominate child actors. -Blanchett over Moore in a much better reviewed film and Wu when they nominated Lopez?!? -Marriage Story leading the nominations but still no Director's nomination. -The Lion King in Best Animated Feature?!? And apparently Disney didn't even submit The Lion King in best animation. Hysterical!

Surprised by the lack of love for Little Women. Saoirse and Desplat got in but their names could be attached to any decent movie and they'll get in.
I'm glad Christian Bale got in. This is his 5th Globe nom this decade. HFPA does love him.

so it looks like Nyong'o and Sandler might go the way of Collette and Hawke.
Part of me wonders if the reason the regional critics go out of their way to award performances like this is precisely because they (like many of us a few months ago) don't expect them to resonate as much with the industry voters and just want to see them win something. Like, they might have been less willing to vote for someone like Phoenix or Driver if they expected those two to be battling it out at all the precursors while passion picks like Sandler and Nyong'o are left out of those conversations.
Otherwise these noms are relatively what I expected. - I thought Two Popes would do well here and they did. - That supporting actor lineup is going to be our Oscar lineup - Marriage Story didn't take a hit at all (Baumbach's scripts have always eclipsed his directing) and will probably take the screenplay win and yeah, possibly BP too - Parasite has proven (unlike Lupita and Sandler) that its popularity transcends regional critic buzz and will only keep going up from here.
Little Women took a slight hit but it's been blown out of proportion. If the HFPA had two screenplay categories she definitely would have been here. Pugh, ehhh she's still fine. I still think she's nominated, and right now she's in a much better position than Bening and Bates. What's surprising is it getting iced out of BP, but something had to be snubbed. This is just too crowded a year. I'm still pegging it for BP and screenplay nods at the Oscars (possibly Ronan too, who wasn't left out here) and for SAG and WGA nods. I still think Little Women is fine.
The one that took the hit was Hustlers. If it was going to succeed anywhere, you'd have expected to see that here. Nothing for the screenplay, no Wu, and no comedy BP. I think its chances at any noms sans Lopez are mostly over.

Not surprised Little Women didn't get any big noms. Should just get nods for Saoirse and techs at the Oscars. I think Joker's BP nom is safe after this performance here. The "live action" Lion King getting an animated nod (because it is an animated film) is hilarious as others have noted.

Jesus Christ, they really gave Joker a BD nod, didn't they? The movie is fine, I liked it and Phoenix is great, but a BD nod? Really? And I can't believe Bening got a nomination for such thankless role as well.

I think Deniro misses the BAFTA too since they arenât that crazy about him and there are plenty of British contenders this year. Though I think he ultimately makes SAG and Oscar like he did for Silver Linings Playbook. The movie is just too big I think.

Someone I follow posted a short part of De Niro's speech from when De Niro accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award, so I thought I should post it here. Newsday article about how controversial it was. I remember the speech. He was totally joking, of course. Get over yourselves, uptight foreign press. (I don't even believe De Niro wrote that speech, by the way lol)

OUATIH for Best Comedy, Phoenix, Renee, Awkwafina and Pitt all seem like virtual locks. Dern is close, but canât discount the Globes pulling a Globes with JLo. The rest are up in the air.

Think it's between Murphy and Egerton, and I'm picking the latter because his is the more popular film.

Yeah, I donât think Leo is gonna win here even if logic dictates he should. The movie basically has 1 very locked win (Comedy), 1 near lock (Pitt) and should be competitive for Director and Screenplay. Itâs gonna get its share as is and theyâve showered him plenty. Plus, Murphy and Egerton are working for it.

1. Marriage Story is stronger than Judy 2. Scarlett Johansson is (now) a bigger star than Renee Zellweger 3. Zellweger already has 3 Globe wins from 7 nominations. Johansson has 0 Globe wins from 5 nominations, and could be seen as due
If Phoenix is really beating Driver (which he logically should), I can see Johansson looking like a good place to reward Marriage Story. She's as much the face of the movie as Driver is, if not more so because she's top-billed. I know Zellweger is being seen as the frontrunner for the Oscar, but I think the pundits made up that narrative partly because they're biased against Johansson.
Between Johansson-Zellweger, I'll say its 60-40 chances.

you know what's a lot more shocking than Little Women's BP snub?
Booksmart's BP snub. When I watched this months ago I would have pegged it as a shoo-in for a best comedy nod at the Globes. I'm legit shocked to not see it here. And they obviously saw it because they nominated Beanie Feldstein (totally deserved btw) so what the hell gives HFPA??
