Now considered one of the best performances ever, but I remember when he was first announced a lot of negativity from people and passionate comic book fans. I remember it wasn't until the first trailer hit in December that year which made people excited.

I was negative at first. I just couldn't see him as Joker. I didn't even like the first pic of him as Joker.
Of course I have changed my mind since then.

I was very familiar with Heath Ledger going back since the late 90s. There was a time I used to watch everything he was in. So when he was cast as the Joker, my reaction was more of a "that's interesting, let's wait and see" kind of thing. It was a role that was wildly different from anything I'd seen him do, but I wasn't denigrating his casting by any means.

I thought it was great /ballsy casting by Nolan and I thought (after seeing Monster Ball & Brokeback Mountain) that Heath would do a good job. What I didn't know was that Heath would knock it right out of the fucking park and gave us an iconic villain performance for the ages!! Seriously, I was stunned when I first saw him on screen as the Joker. The laugh & the voice gave me goosebumps.

It was definitely out of left field but I knew he was super talented so I was against it. Mainly I just laughed at all the outraged fanboys online.

I thought it was a strange WTF choice when there were so many 'obvious' picks around who'd have been fine choices, but then he had blown me totally away and surpassed all expectations in Brokeback Mountain, so I sort of thought it would be foolish to totally write him off too as he was clearly growing as a performer and capable of interesting work. So yeah, mixed feelings. I know the wider reaction from people who never saw or cared about his work in Brokeback was almost like Affleck as Batman bad.

I thought it was crazy, despite liking Ledger. I just didn't imagine what we got was possible. Probably the only time I've had a complete 180 on a big casting decision.

I knew right away that he would win the Oscar for it.
And I was right the whole time!

I was surprised at the time because I don't remember anybody ever suggesting him. Also I was under the impression that it was between a couple actors that was rumored at the time. So it did surprise me but at the same time I hated every other fan choice and couldn't think of anybody myself. I did like the choice of casting Ledger but I never expected to get what we got.

I thought he could have some fun with it but would have a hard time making it out of Nicholson's shadow (not that Nicholson set an impossible standard, just the iconic status of it). I never could've imagined they'd take that route with the Joker or that Heath would give one of the 10 or so best performances I'll probably ever see.
