Why do you guys have to do that tho? Genuinely curious, want a real answer. I could be mistaken, but I think that it was the idea of one of the founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin. Its rather annoying, and now since 8 months of the year are on the one side, and only four months on the other, rather unnecessary.

And the nuttiest thing is, Benjamin Franklin's idea was meant as a JOKE. It came from a satiric essay about saving money on candles.
