This is about Garland as a moviestar, not as an actress or singer.- Well Judy has a new comeback thanks to Renne Zellwegger. But she deserves all these praise? Or is just a product of the American LGBTQ lobby?
I was born in 1979, and until the late 80s, early 90s I never heard a word of Judy Garland. Then I've seen The Wizard of Oz, and I heard that was Liza Minelli mother. Yep I knew who Liza Minelli was since I was a little born I guess. She was a popular actress and singer. She was popular in TV thanks 4 her films and her duets with Sinatra or in the Liberty Weekend.
So for many years I thought that Garland was Liza Minelli lesser famous mother. But from the late 90s I've seen Minelli as the forgotten daughter of Judy Garland and Vincent Minelli, who had the luck of wining an Oscar.-
So, what happened? Is just my perception? or Judy Garland is so huge?

Younger people know her primarily for Wizard of Oz and A Star is Born, but those 40's musicals were all huge at the time. She was one of the biggest BO draws in the 40's. A much bigger star than Liza Minelli.

Not as Overrated as MsMovieStar How DARE you ray?! I have seen MsMovieStar set a man's testicles on fire and then douse the fire with Tabasco sauce for saying that. I was there in 19__ when she nearly caused a riot in Cannes by "forgetting" to wear panties which caused the French press to dub her "Le Prostituéede Américaine " which lead to several artistic triumphs, not the least of which was her iconic, tour de force in the sex comedy "Coup De Pied Pénis" (aka "Balls on Fire" aka "This Kitten Has Claws .........and a Whip" aka "Police evidence #235 "Your Purchase Of This Movie Ticket May Constitute a Felony")" I saw her give a lewd performance fueled by (several) bottles of gin of "The Trolley Song" which made Charles Boyer nearly faint when she sang what really went "ding ding ding" - it was not a bell, I can assure you of that and it was GOAT level. In fact a goat was involved in the performance but I digress........ Those performances, often categorized by the press as "drunken orgies of chaos where you may end up half dead, injured or broke" are legendary and started the trend of bolding text on this message board! She started that!! In 2016 Nicole Kidman said of her "We've had our problems, yes, but deep down I always respected the work she did and am sure she respects me" - to which msmoviestar replied "Who is that now?" Judy Garland? Pfffffft............

I'd say she's as pure a movie star as it gets for her era. Obviously she's a bit of a product of her studio, but that applied to everyone back then.

Younger people know her primarily for Wizard of Oz and A Star is Born, but those 40's musicals were all huge at the time. She was one of the biggest BO draws in the 40's. A much bigger star than Liza Minelli. But they lived in different ages. Garland worked in Hollywood Golden Age, in a time that was common that a major movie star makes 3 films per year. And there were dozens of big femele stars from Betty Davis to Betty Grable.- Liza on the other hand, lived in the worst age, an age of declining with very few famous actress. So she could take several off without competition.-

Oh honey, wasn't Garland blacklisted by the studio by the time she was 28 or something? Clearly she's celebrated for her talent, especially her tremendous voice.
Please excuse ray. He is in love with me but can't get the money together to have me... frustration makes him blurt out the most terrible things... now does anybody have a lighter?

My father was born in 1938 in a small town, and move to Montevideo in the late 50s, and my mother in 1949. So probably my parents never seen the Judy Gaarland success on theatres. One for being a country man, that obviously prefered a Johnny Weismuller films, and the other for being too young. That's why I never heard of Gaarland. Yep I heard of other stars like Brando, Taylor, Minelli,Bardot, Monroe, Sinatra, Gene and Grace Kelly but all these become huge stars after Garland semiretirement in 1950.
By that time, middle 80s, I knew the existence of older movie stars like Greta Garbo or Chaplin, because they were more iconic during my childhood.-

until I've see her movies adjusted by box office. Yep, you are right guys. Garland was the Jennifer Lawrence of the 40s, without the Oscar recognition.-
According ultimate box office, her movies adjusting inflation made and average around now at days 180 millions dollares.
The Wizard of Oz according to the info wasn't the it was expected. According to this site, made over 300 million dollars and was the seccond most succesful film of 1939. Maybe was re-realesed later, and that's why this big number. Or maybe was a too expensive movie.
A Star is Born, is also considerated a box office bomb. but according to this site, was the eleventh most succesful movie of 1954, maybe also the high cost production values were too expensive, maybe they had a re-realese years later. But today 255 million for a musical, couldn't be seriously taken as big flop.
The she made the Oscar nominated film Judgement of Nuremberg that was a critical and box office success. However is under the average of Garland box office number. Only made 136. millions around last year Spielberg Ready Play one. Her last 3 films, including an animated feature, were trully box office bombs. In the US, according to inflassion The Gay Puree made less money than Julia Robert's The Ant Bully, a Child is Waiting less than Chastain Molly's Game, a I could go on Singing just a little more than JLaw Mother

Overrated? ha. Never! Having seen sooooo many Judy Garland films, even the obscure ones, I can say she's the greatest entertainer we've had.
