Thoughts on Sofia Coppola? Lost in Translation is one of my favorites of all-time. While I like Somewhere and The Bling Ring, she hasn't come close to her LIT acclaim.

LiT is probably in my Top 30 of all time. And I'd call The Virgin Suicides her second best (rate it a lesser 8/10). I like Somewhere and The Bling Ring, but they are far from great and I dislike Marie Antoinette.

Always wondered why Phil Joanou's career as a director never took off. State Of Grace was a terrific small scale crime movie that seemed to herald great things to come .It had a career best Gary Oldman performance and a notable cast including Ed Harris, Sean Penn and Robin Wright.
I know the movie made no money, but it came to be very well regarded in industry circles. He's directed some work-for-hire movies here and there, but he's mostly settled for bring U2's videographer.

Uma Thurman and Eric Bana came to my mind.

Kate Hudson
Does anybody remember her?
Almost Famous was like a wave in the early 00s and everybody thought Kate was gonna follow in her mothers footsteps and probably eventually surpass her as a cultural legend.
Nowadays its hard to distinguish her against other girls and her jaggy perception has her mostly in a bunch of re-run films on cable TV nobody much cares about.

The problem is that she can't seem to tell another story other than of "rich white girl is bored/depressed". And Walter Salles!!! At least his English speaking films.- But in Salles case, he did fine with the Portuguese speaking ones. Plus, if I owned a bank, I wouldn't worry much about working.

People were getting a bit carried away with Michael Fassbender and Oscar Isaac for a hot minute. Particularly Fassy. Both very fine actors, but I think people also thought they could be "movie stars", and while both have tried, they don't seem to have "it". Lol, i was most definitely one of those Fassy fangirls, so tragic how I have no idea what movies he's in now. Looking back, I'm not even sure what drew me to Fassbender other than the sex appeal lol (maybe it was a mixture of Shame and X-Men). But I'd agree, he's a solid actor (not even "great", but doesn't have the movie star appeal).

It's closer to the #1 film of 2006 rather than the middling movie some people see it as. I suppose if you were to do a Top 10 of 2006, it has a good chance of making a Top 5 on this board - which means I think there are some people who sees it as a worthy follow-up to Lost in Translation. It's much better than Children of Bore or that something Labyrinth which are more middling to me than the standouts they are to some people. I think Somewhere and On the Rocks are very good and enjoyable, they're not Lost in Translation. So... I kinda agree. She needs a bit more of a beefier resume, but seems like it's always been the case that she's like Wachowski, Richard Kelly, Harmony Korine....... she catches some people's fancy, but shuns the majority. But also.... Campion had 27 years between The Piano and Power of the Dog, and Lost in Translation is only 20 years old, so.... there's that to remember too.

Joe Alwyn. I remember when his Ang Lee movie dropped and the buzz was he’s the next big thing and an actor to keep an eye on bc his talent was that great. And it just never happened

I was thinking about her career the other day. I agree with you. I found out only a few years ago she was Oscar nominated and was shocked her career reached that high. She’s become what I call a red carpet actress like Kate Bosworth. Speaking of, Bosworth is another actress I expected to blow up following the hype around Blue Crush but that didn’t happen either.

Barbie, you're actually old enough for Blue Crush? I just always assumed you were very young.... I remember you on IMDB and I just thought you were in your teens/early 00s. Maybe late 20s now. Blue Crush and Bring It On and Crossroads were among my favorite teen movies when I was 13-15. And yes, Kate Bosworth was popular in the teen world, nominated for lots of MTV and teen choice awards, and similar to her counterpart Julia Stiles, they both went away after the early 00s.

LOL I remember Blue Crush bc I got really into pop culture when I was a kid and have memories of the most random things. Also I go down pop culture nostalgia rabbit holes frequently (it’s my ADHD hyper focus lol) so I know about stuff before my time

Piper Perabo
Remember when she was considered a beauty like an earlier Eva Green?
This board is used to debating Saoirse Ronan vs Emma Stone. But back in the days I was debating Piper Perabo vs Mischa Barton. I guess I need to watch Lost and Delirious again and do some early 00s retrospective.

Jacob Tremblay, who hasn't had a worthy role since Room and is still super short AND looks like he's had a ton of work done. Idk who's styling him.

I'll maintain that his brief scene in Doctor Sleep is one of the most harrowing performances under five minutes in the last decade. He's still a very good actor, but he's in that weird awkward teenage no-man's-land where it remains to be seen if he can transition successfully into mainstream adult performances.

It sounds like stabcaesar was mostly kidding but yeah, child actors are unfair for this topic. You basically always have to reset your expectations once they hit their 20s and hopefully give another "first" great performance, and then you can properly judge whether or not they lived up to that in the big leagues.
Tremblay's held it together fine and he rightly got a lot of praise for that Doctor Sleep performance. I look at somebody like Freddie Highmore as a decent standard for what a child actor going off an acclaimed performance could carve out by 30. Nobody has to be Saoirse. If you survive, you've won.

Ben Wheatley, what the hell happened? Kill List is one of the finest British horror films ever, and while A Field in England and High Rise were diminishing returns, they still had plenty of style but his career has completely fallen off a cliff and plummeted to depths that would have been unimaginable 10 years ago. Why is this clearly talented guy wasting himself on projects like Rebecca and The Meg 2? That's low even by the normally trashy standards of a paycheck job.
