I'm sure this has been talked about to death even though it's been so soon, but why do you think they did it? Someone said that it feels like the end of an era, and I agree somehow. Is it something to do with the changing cultural/political climate of America, and extended throughout the world? I know it sounds far fetched, but is it really a coincidence that they close when Trump takes office? Or was it that people were getting too political and generally ruthless on there? Having a board for individual films and actors was vital and made sharing thoughts so much more easier and direct, and yet they pull it all down and don't even let us see old posts.
You think they'll re-activate it in the near future?

Well Colonel Needham was getting heat from his superiors, so he took it down.

the boards had become a very toxic place and there's no way they could efficiently admin so many boards. It's too bad all the positive and educational discussion had to be axed too, but I get the reasoning behind the decision.

I think it was all negative, racist bashing that was going on for the last year or so. Why? look at the timing of when the boards closed down. They announced the closing of the boards on 2.3 and they couldn't even let us discuss the Oscars, the biggest night for the movie industry on a freaking movie discussion board. LMAO!!! Right. That's all the evidence that I needed as to the why. Seriously, why pick before the Oscars? Had they said the boards were closing on 2.28 then I would say, the racist comments were not the issues but the proof is in the pudding as they say. In addition, I think they probably would have turned a blind eye had they figured out a way to make money off us but since that wasn't happening.... they just pulled the plug.

They couldn't find a way to make money of them - and they cost too much to keep running.

I disagree, I think had some degree of effort been put forth the place could've been at least decently moderated. I hope it comes back in some form.

They could probably let it slide in the past, but the craziness of 2016 infiltrated almost every board I looked at.

They could probably let it slide in the past, but the craziness of 2016 infiltrated almost every board I looked at. It could have been done. The boards for movies and actors weren't that active, only the recent movies had crazy traffic on boards. The general boards would not be this hard to moderate either, the traffic there wasn't so big it would be impossible to moderate. Look at this board, yep, it's MUCH smaller in scale but so many people here moderate it for free and it's running smoothly. No reason why the same couldn't happen for a place with boards with more posts to moderate. You just need more people to do it.

There were some terrible comments on there: both towards people in the industry and directed towards individual posters. I'm sure every single person who has posted there has faced some idiocy directed specifically at them at some time or another (more often, frequently!) But ultimately, I think IMDB didn't care about the message boards and they probably at best perceive message boards as an outdated means of online interaction.
When you think about what drives filmmaking, it is pretty much never the opinions of random film fans even at the best of times, so why would IMDB/Amazon care about retaining a place for film fans to discuss films, just out of the goodness of their hearts? Particularly given the fact that to make the place non toxic, time, and possibly money would have to be spent and presumably the message boards do not bring in any revenue.
I don't think the boards will return. The ease with which they were abandoned completely, without even a thought to the upcoming Oscars shows how important those in power considered the boards and us to be.
