The Kennedy Center Honors is an annual honor given to those in the performing arts for their lifetime of contributions to American culture. The honors have been presented annually since 1978, culminating each December in a star-studded gala celebrating the honorees in the Kennedy Center Opera House. This December stephen fave Sally Field receives it. It's a fascinating and odd award - sort of US version of a knighthood! - first you have to be alive to get it, and you have to agree to show up (so Brando, Scott didn't get it) .........politics matter (no Jane Fonda or Vanessa Redgrave so far at least) .......AND they can take it away from you (Bill Cosby) - but you do not have to be American to get it. It's a great TV show - the honoree never speaks - and is just bowed down to like they are a God - a complete list of honorees is in the link below and some suggestions in bold.........and of course Allen and Polanski they wouldn't get near. Robert Duvall - getting up there in age to say the least and Nicholson/Hoffman/Pacino/De Niro already have it
Gene Hackman - Not sure he'd show, kinda doubt it
Glenn Close - how many indignities must she suffer @tyler !!??
US Triple crown actresses - Jessica Lange, Viola Davis, Frances McDormand, Ellen Burstyn
UK Triple crown actresses - Maggie Smith (not sure she'd show up), Helen Mirren, Glenda Jackson
Major US actresses - Sissy Spacek, Sigourney Weaver and Diane Keaton
The 80s actors - Hanks has it already (his AFI and Kennedy Center were shockingly young) but not..........Michael Douglas, Jeff Bridges, Denzel Washington, DDL (not sure he'd show up anyway), Gary Oldman.
The filmmakers - Francis Ford Coppola - no AFI either yet, wtf........ Coen Brothers

I would think Coppola is the worst snub of sorts from the ones you mention. I mean, even if you only consider the 1970s, he should be done with already. Could he have been offered it before, and the refusal is kept on the qt?
Not sure how her health is, as in would she be fit to show if she wanted to, but Betty White seems to be missing from that wiki page.

Ellen Burstyn and Maggie Smith could be next.
I consider starting a petition for Coppola to get an AFI Achievement Award.

When Patricia McBride (arguably America's greatest ballet dancer) was awarded in 2014, she said: "It's one of the greatest awards one can get... To be an artist in America and to be honored for it is extraordinary. In Europe, they really honor their artists. Here, it's not as revered."

How about the major older British actors - Jeremy Irons (a Triple Crown winner), Anthony Hopkins, Michael Caine, Ian McKellen.
I'm not sure which one of these "most" qualifies for shaping American culture.....

He's also the only one who lives in America, so that might make a difference. I don't think any of the UK actresses you suggested would qualify, with perhaps the exception of Helen Mirren (who also lives in America).

It's not mandatory for someone to live in the US to get the Kennedy Honor But yes, I believe that from the ones mentioned above, you could argue that only Hopkins has shaped American culture. Much more than the others, anyway.

This will air Sunday the 15th @ 8:00 PM on CBS - a little earlier than normal (usually it's after Christmas) - so make a note, and again Sally Field is this years movie related honoree.

I always thought that the Kennedy Center Honors were specifically for contributions to American culture. I'm perfectly fine with giving them to international recipients, but the focus should be on how important they've been to Americans (if I'm correct about the award criteria). O11 Cheadle and Poppins DvD would make an amazing pairing and I want a universe in which that exists.

Midler??? What the hell... It makes sense to me. There are others who may be more deserving, but she's had an amazing career.
