Reportedly Jeanne Tripplehorn was initially cast, but had to drop out due to a family emergency. Both Sarah Jessica Parker and Marisa Tomei were seriously considered, with the offer eventually being extended to Tomei, who turned it down. MacDowell was then cast.
The general consensus is that MacDowell was the weak link of the cast, and the other three finalists are certainly more naturally gifted as actors. Do you feel that one of them could have been better? Who'd have been your choice?

I liked Andie but I'd much prefer Tomei who had a fine (but unexplored) chemistry with Grant in "The Rewrite"

I voted for Tomei but that doesn't mean I didn't like MacDowell.

I like Tomei better as an actress, but McDowell looks more like a model. She's 4 inches taller and she stands out more. Not saying Tomei isn't attractive though.

Horseface would be an easy straight swap for Isitstillrainingihadntnoticed, I can't see Tripplehorn in the role at all, but she'd have probably been nice (much nicer than the pretty odd character actually came off). Tomei would have probably been very different to Isitstillrainingihadntnoticed, but I can sort of see it. I'm sure she'd have been wonderful, as she so often is. Isitstillrainingihadntnoticed was generally fine in the role though, and didn't ruin the movie, even that time when it was still raining and she hadn't noticed.

I read many reviews of this film yet they all loved it but had one flaw, MacDowell's performance. How exactly? I really admired her work in this project. However, it did seem she was overshadowed by the entire cast.

Tomei is a superior actress, but I think that part is just so much like MacDowell.

Over MacDowell, any of them.

That might be because MacDowell actually was a top model before she transitioned to acting. Carrie isn't a model in the film, though - she works for British Vogue.

Did you watch the Red Nose reunion special? I really want to see it, but I'm not sure that it aired in the US...

I really love the movie but I agree that MacDowell is something of a weak spot in the otherwise marvelous cast. She didn't quite have the warmth or charisma to pull off those kinds of rom-com roles and was better suited to independent and character and dialogue-driven features (I'll take her in Sex Lies and Videotape and Short Cuts over Four Weddings and Groundhog Day any day of the week). She was no Julia Roberts.
love the idea of Marisa Tomei in the role.

I'd say that she learned on the job and become much better with time and experience - her recent cameo in Magic Mike XXL was so charming and sexy, loose and fun. I think that even though she's quite stiff in Four Weddings and a Funeral, she's still rather effective in some ways - she's very elegant and chic. You can certainly picture her writing and working for an international edition of Vogue. Tomei wouldn't have had that same kind of patrician bearing. Remember that Grant's character is a little intimidated by her initially.

Gosh, just one more reason that I need to see that movie already. That's 100% true and I forgot that she was supposed to be intimidating. In that case Tomei probably wouldn't have been the right choice but surely there's a happy medium there. Maybe Annette Bening or Madeleine Stowe or maybe even Julianne Moore? Benning was in the peak of her beauty in the early-mid 90s and proved with Bugsy that she could play refined and elegant and with Grifters that she could play someone in total awareness and control of their sexuality. On the other hand Madeleine's Stowe's sexiness feels more grounded but still could be intimidating (she proved that in Last of the Mohicans). Yeah, the more I think about it the more I think Stowe would have been totally ideal for the role. Sexy without being unattainable, warm and charismatic while still being refined enough to be out of Grant's league. What do you think?

Tomei, easily. MacDowell was the weakest part of an already really shaky movie.

Since her character Carrie worked for British Vogue, here's MacDowell on the actual cover of British Vogue (December 1982) LaraQ: Perfection...

It's weird how her woodenness kind of worked for the character, so much so that I can't really someone else playing her. I like the Madeleine Stowe suggestion upthread, but she's almost too stern and sturdy. Annette Bening would've been an inspired choice but it's a bit difficult imagining the right chemistry between her and Grant.
What about Phoebe Cates?
(Sidenote: I saw MacDowell at TIFF last year walking out of the screening for Donnybrook, and she looked slightly solemn. Maybe she wasn't thrilled with the film? Anyways, she was quite striking).

McDowell was perfect, she was the weakest, just because her character was ethereal unlike the others were more earthy. She just has to be pretty, being funny (but not tooo funny) and smile.

She was good. She just had one bad line reading with the rain scene.

HELENA MARIA - I hadn't read that about Cates! I'm sure she would have been good, but I'm definitely glad the Charles role went to Grant instead of Roth.
