...and could pick out 10 items, what would you pick? I'd make off with these in a heartbeat. Barry Lyndon The Battle of Algiers In Cold Blood Marketa Lazarová My Dinner with Andre Revanche A Room with a View Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom State of Siege ZViced isn't invited to our closet-raiding party because he already owns everything in it

Since I own a few top favorites (Barcelona, Harakiri, Hopscotch, Metropolitan, Monsoon Wedding, Mystery Train, Rosetta, Shallow Grave The Silence of the Lambs), I'd... wow. That's more than "a few." I never realized I had so many. It's exactly half of my DVD/Blu collection, not counting the TV shows that I actually watch sometimes. I stopped collecting movies because they just wind up sitting there, but hey this is free and Criterion is GREAT for bragging that I'm an elitist swine.
All That Jazz Anatomy of a Murder The Breakfast Club The Hit Kuroneko Pan's Labyrinth Phoenix The Princess Bride Rosemary's Baby Solaris
I'm aware that some of these have quality non-Criterion releases, but they're free and mainly window dressing anyway.

I asked myself that question before and the answer is the same -go to the boxsets- The epic Ingmar Begman boxset that goes out of stock every time is on the market The equally epic 100 years of Olympic films Jacques Tati Dietrich and von Sternberg Scorsese World of Cinema Project 2 Apu Trilogy Kenji Mizoguchi fallen Dekalog ( it's shameful that I don't have this one yet ) Chantal Akerman in the 70s. And, that's it.

Maybe this is the right time to say that my first Criterion ever was the Three Colors box set but if I'm invited in a couple of years, I could renew it. I own the Stillman I like the most ( Metropolitan ) so I'll go with the one I've never heard of before and given that I'm still looking for the so-called golden age of television, is now on my whishlist, I've seen the film versions of a couple of features, so I'll be interesting to see them side by side. Rod Steiger seems like such a good casting for Marty

Rod Steiger seems like such a good casting for Marty Steiger's Marty is heartbreaking. Much, much better than Borgnine's portrayal. Borgnine is fine, but Steiger brings what I say is his best performance. Patterns is brilliant, best of the collection -- the energy of the live performance is palpable, just like in a really good stage performance. No Time for Sergeants is hilarious, and filmed in front of a live audience so we have a built in laughtrack. Wouldn't work if the show wasn't funny, but it is. A Wind from the South is boring. There's nothing here worthwhile. Requiem for a Heavyweight is kind of dull. I actually prefer the movie version, which features stronger performances. Bang the Drum Slowly is a bit slow, but it's a pretty effective tearjerker. Haven't seen the movie with De Niro, but I doubt it's as good as this. Mickey Rooney is a force of nature in The Comedian. The show is over the top and excessively melodramatic, but DAMN does Rooney sink his teeth into this. He singlehandedly elevates this from "solid enough melodrama" to "Daniel Plainview has nothing on this maniac!" One of the greatest performances ever. Days of Wine and Roses experiments with mixing in previously filmed material with the live stuff, and it comes off as fairly unwieldy. It's still a solid enough script, but this is another case in which I prefer the movie version.

Now I'm looking forward The Comedian even more, and the idea of live television (no talk show ) has always intrigued me

Not including what I already own of course, something like...
Barry Lyndon Brazil Do the Right Thing Fanny and Alexander Mulholland Dr. Rosemary's Baby The Royal Tenenbaums Ugetsu Y tu mamá también 4 by Agnès Varda -- Le Pointe Courte, Cléo from 5 to 7, Le bonheur, Vagabond

According to that Letterboxd list, I watched only 129 films from the 1,392 films in the Criterion catalog. Hard to choose only 10, but my choices would be; The Passion of Joan of Arc The Before Trilogy Mulholland Drive In Cold Blood 12 Angry Man Wings of Desire Do The Right Thing Nights of Cabiria The Red Shoes Peeping Tom
