Do you remember this controversy? The Italian press really went in on him... In addition to awarding prizes to close friends Coppola and de la Iglesia, Tarantino asked Festival head Marco Mueller to break the rules in order to honor Essential Killing with a Special Jury Prize - the film had already been awarded Best Actor for Vincent Gallo, and prior to this rules change, films in competition were only allowed to win one major award. What do you think?

Don't think it's possible.

Don't think it's possible. According to Tarantino, Sofia Coppola's Golden Lion was unanimously awarded, too. Do you think Italy was just salty because no Italian films received prizes? There were in fact two Italians on the jury - Luca Guadagnino and Gabriele Salvatores.

No more than Guillermo Del Toro did last year for Alfonso. That's why I think that if there is a clear conflict of interest (i.e. close friends of jury heads presenting films in competition), they should either run out of competition or bow elsewhere.
I don't doubt that Tarantino went to bat for Somewhere, and it could be that he made an impassioned defense of it in the jury deliberations. But I wouldn't call it a fix.

But Coppola's win being a unanimous decision? Hard to believe. After all, most of the films that triumph in VFF are critically acclaimed, loved by the audiences and many of them have also won in other festivals or the Oscars etc. If I'm not mistaken, Somewhere won only this major award.

Had no idea they dated. No way he's her type. Maybe that's why I don't keep up with celebrity stuff.

She's usually gone for much "prettier" and more sensitive types - Keanu Reeves, Spike Jonze, and her current husband, Thomas Mars. According to Vogue, she dated Tarantino after her divorce from Jonze - maybe she just wanted a completely different kind of guy?

I don't know what's weirder: the fact that Coppola dated Tarantino or Keanu Reeves (when was it? Around the Dracula times?).
And I wouldn't say Somewhere's win being followed by no major success makes it questionable. Yeah, TSOW and Roma being the last Golden Lion winners make it seem this ticket to high fortune, but it's not uncommon that the Golden Lion winner doesn't make a splash after the festival. For every Roma and Brokeback Mountain, you have a Faust and Pietà.

Keanu Reeves (when was it? Around the Dracula times?). Yes! It was in 1992. She gave a shout-out to him in Lost in Translation - remember that he was also starring in Anna Faris' character's film?
