Finally! Seriously - good for him, but slightly OTT ....... I can now leave this board........! Told you puppy / chucky I'm usually right fellas........even about actors with weak sauce filmographies and Cate Blanchett being better than Kidman.........so I'm gonna need you 2 to like this post, k? ....so I guess we can close this thread? (Moderators PLEASE do NOT close this thread, and I am not leaving ffs - that was a joke - please let thread run until Djokovic retires ..........or hits 30 Grand Slams..........or gets a COVID shot.......whichever comes first) Side note: Federer is probably like, dude, wtf?.......have some dignity, ibbi CNN — Rafael Nadal believes long-time rival Novak Djokovic is the greatest tennis player of all time and says “there is nothing to discuss” about the sport’s GOAT debate.************* The Serb recently won a record-extending 24th grand slam singles title at the US Open, taking him two clear of Nadal in second place.
Djokovic can also boast a record 39 Masters 1000 titles, three ahead of Nadal, and the most weeks spent at world No. 1 with 392, 82 weeks more than Roger Federer in second place.
“I believe that numbers are numbers and statistics are statistics and, in that sense, I think he has better numbers than mine and that is indisputable,” Nadal told Spanish outlet Diario AS. “It is not beneath me nor do I have an ego big enough to try to disguise a reality that is not. This is the truth.
“The rest are tastes, inspiration, sensations that one player or the other may transmit to you, that you may like one or the other more. I think that with respect to titles, Djokovic is the best in history and there is nothing to discuss in that.”
Nadal added that some people could say he’d had “bad luck” with injuries and Djokovic has enjoyed better fortune, but said philosophically that “in some ways, that is also part of the sport.”
“I congratulate him for everything he is achieving and that does not cause me any type of frustration,” Nadal said. “I have said it when I was the one who won the most slams, I said it when we were tied and I say it now that I am behind. www.cnn.com/2023/09/20/sport/rafael-nadal-novak-djokovic-best-tennis-player-in-history-spt-intl/index.html

Djokovic fans across the internet are so desperate to have something to cling onto at the end of this rainbow that they're taking the compliment and ignoring the backhand Nadal has hit as sweet as any Djokovic or Murray or Safin or Agassi ever did. Rafa, who has always come across like a total farmboy in English, continues to prove himself the shrewdest operator in the game. Like, again and again he qualifies everything he says, and these people are SO HAPPY THEY HAVE SOMETHING they can't see it. Or they're too dumb to see it. One or the other. In the end, I guess we should just be happy they're not finding something to complain about for the first time in as long as I can remember. Were I as naive as they appear to be I'd be hopeful it would last.

Here's Cam Williams take which should be great for comments - not sure Nadal is being shrewd or anything like that.......think he sounds deeply hurt and depressed af tbh and yeah I'm loving this but I'm dumb I guess because to me he just sounds like Secondal which I guess is better than being Thirderer .......... On the bright side - this kind of means I can let this thread die down until the ATP finals later this year .........and just bask in this glorious afterglow .................Watch him win the French Open now

Is Djokovic done? He's an all-time great level player so you can't count him coming back to the level we are used to from him, but it used to be fair normal for players his age (or younger even) to have a sudden massive drop-off in form and never quite get back to their previous level. The locker room has no fear of him right now and everyone sees him as beatable. So yeah, this may be the end of the road for him in terms of winning slams. Nope I really love this thread.........it's like an endless victory lap for me really........

Ngl if he gets a stadium named after him in the country that kicked him out - before Nadal gets one at Roland Garros it would be hysterical and sweet revenge to still not have the COVID shot....although he already got revenge in Australia by winning this year anyway.......but THAT stadium thing would be like Nadal admitting Djokovic is better or something........oh wait that actually happened didn't it? The Australian Open’s director, Craig Tiley, has said that he would be happy to recognise Novak Djokovic’s accomplishments if a stadium or other facility were to be dedicated in his honour.
Novak Djokovic is the most successful singles star in the history of the Australian Open, but Tiley doesn’t have the ability to change the name of the Melbourne Tennis Centre.
The Australian Open leases the courts and stadiums and doesn’t hold the naming rights. As things stand, the arenas within the tennis centre are named for Australian tennis legends Rod Laver and Margaret Court.
“You’re the second person who’s asked me that today,” Tiley said on the latest episode of the ‘Rock n Roll Tennis’ podcast. www.tennis365.com/tennis-news/australian-open-honouring-novak-djokovic-stadium-naming

Gill Gross breaking down 2 big questions in a new video: @1:30 Why Djokovic usually won the mental battles vs. Fed (ie all those 15-40 comebacks) and at 25:34 why Nadal had to admit that Djokovic is greater (answer: because he is obviouly greater) and why Djokovic being "best of his generation" increases the argument for people he never battled Laver, Sampras, Bjorg ...... Since you can't argue any Djokovic "peer" as better because Djokovic won out in his era ....... that's the exact same argument you can use to argue Federer over Nadal - since the "slam count" doesn't matter if you only have "the 2nd most".........because Djokovic will always have the most out of this group of men players.........

This is really good stuff - Gill Gross goes back to his video I posted earlier this week ^ and talks more directly about the question of GOAT and why it's kind of stupid - but why he (now) says the answer is "either Djokovic is the GOAT .......or there is no GOAT at all" sort of like how we say on MAR "Brando is the GOAT (or whomever) but there is no GOAT really"..........which sort of makes my postings in this thread meaningless ............really interesting though in how he looks at the "Pre-Big 3 era"......people just getting into Tennis or casual sports fans would like this analysis too I think......

Particularly relevant since Alcaraz lost yesterday so he'll stay #2 at least a bit longer to Djokovic: How much better is Djokovic than Nadal? A lot better - consider this stat:
Carlos Alcaraz - the current world number 2 - at just 20 years of age - has 36 weeks as the number 1 - that is actually closer to Nadal's weeks at #1 (209) than Nadal - at 37 years of age - is to Djokovic's incredible record of 393 weeks - and still counting .......

Everyday on Twitter - every fncking day - you find something priceless like this...... ..........Clay Court Specialist.......arguably 3rd of the big 3 tbh...... 1995 (Jason’s Version) @certinfy Rafael Nadal’s last 17 matches against Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer off clay.
0 matches won. 6 sets won.
17 matches lost. 36 sets lost.
Anyone who honestly thinks Rafael Nadal is even remotely close to being the GOAT needs a reality check. 10:39 AM · Oct 5, 2023

But yeah, not surprising that Djokovic is on Alcaraz' mind all the time. I'm sure Federer and Nadal has been on Djokovic' mind a lot through the years as well, it's only natural.

I think Messi is a suitable name yes, indeed and LeBron has a lot of years too now.......which reminds me Djokovic / Messi are very linked but I don't follow Messi's sport much to know the details exactly - but Messi essentially "became the GOAT" in a mainstream way more when he won the World Cup and the tag got applied to Djokovic by mainstream media in the next few months with GS 22-23 .........like they have identifiable moments when they became acknowledged GOATs ................they are same age I think........comparable run at the top over 2 decades ......... age defying....... Obviously a lot of people called them the GOATs before that ^ .........but it was a more consistent thing among mainstream media and sports outlets........I mean do people try to get Ronaldo to call Messi the GOAT now the way Nadal has to deal with that stuff? I have a lot of fun in this thread but I imagine getting that question for Nadal when he comes back may be maddening for real......... Side note: I got to see Djokovic play at the US Open and to see Messi play shortly after too - I had never seen either in person before......it was a lot of fun.....

I have a lot of fun in this thread but I imagine getting that question for Nadal when he comes back may be maddening for real......... I mean, many still regard Pele or Maradona as the GOAT because of reasons. It's hard to compare players in such drastically different eras, but what really stands out with Messi is that he is among the best of all time in many different areas of the (attacking) game whereas most great players are brilliant in one area but maybe not as much in others. That Messi is the best of all time I think is hard to argue against, but the greatest will always be contested.
Ronaldo probably still considers himself to be the best player in the world, so I doubt he'd breathe the possibility of Messi being the GOAT. Anyway, I used to be on the Ronaldo side in the Messi v Ronaldo debate, but with age I've realized that the gap between Messi and Ronaldo was just as big as the gap between Ronaldo and the rest was.

In other tennis news today: Secondal, or Nadalast of the Big 3 - returns in Australia - allegedly.......what an AO 24 - Djokovic goes for the historic #25, Alcaraz will try to snatch his title like he did at Wimbledon and Djokovic did to him in NYC and Nadal returns.........and Osaka.......hmmmmmmmm Rafael Nadal will make his return to Grand Slam tennis following hip surgery at the 2024 Australian Open, says tournament chief Craig Tiley.
Spain's 22-time Grand Slam champion has been out of action since January and underwent surgery in June.
Nadal, 37, has said he plans to retire at the end of the 2024 season.
According to Tiley, former women's champions Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber and Caroline Wozniacki also plan to return after maternity breaks.
Nadal has been sidelined since injuring his hip flexor in a second-round defeat by Mackenzie McDonald at January's Australian Open.
Well that didn't last long: Stay down ffs, it's over ......... However, Nadal’s spokesperson gave a different version when asked by Mail Sport. ‘We don’t know anything about his schedule yet,’ he said. ‘We have seen the reports and comments but as of today we wouldn’t be able to confirm. It is too early to say, even for Melbourne.’
He also revealed that the 37 year-old is currently able to practice on court for two hours per day at his academy in Mallorca as he tries to recover from a complex hip injury which has seen him drop out of sight this season.

It’s now sure Djokovic won’t be surpassed in the ATP Race before the Paris Masters, when he will be back to play his last events of the season

I am happy to train a genius, the best tennis player of all time and one of the best athletes in general
He ain't wrong and he ain't talking about Nadal ffs....it's like I always say - with actors you can argue any actor - as BAFTA-less as they might be (um) as the GOAT - it's opinion - big deal....but in sports it's much more clearer (usually) and in tennis it's a closed case tbh...
