Barring the massive height difference, they do tend to favor each other, right? Which of these young Brits do you prefer as an actor? Do you have a preference looks-wise? Who do you see having a more sustainable career?

Clafin is a better actor from what I've seen. A lot more edge to him. A less douchey Alex Pettyfr if you will. Was quite impressed by him in The Riot Club.
But Clafin never had the good fortune to fall into Bryan Singer's influential twink loving orbit like Hoult, so Hoult will have the better career.

I prefer Hoult and I can see him going on to have the bigger career, but I do think Claflin is a hugely underrated actor,he was great in My Cousin Rachel and Adrift.

You know that Jamie Bell was originally cast in Hoult's part in A Single Man, but dropped out due to unspecified disagreements. It's probably just hearsay, but there are definitely rumors that Hoult has worked the casting couch.

I don't think I've seen enough of Clafin's work to judge his acting, but he was fine in The Hunger Games. But both acting-wise and look-wise, I think he lacks a darker edge that Hoult has and has enabled him to succeed in things like The Favourite, Skins and A Single Man. And that makes it possible to picture him in something like Batman, which I don't think would fit Clafin from what I know of him.

Clafin makes Hoult look like a choirboy in all those projects you mentioned. Look are subjective, but acting wise, he'd be better in all those projects (except Skins, which needed Hoult's weedy physicality to be believable) than Hoult, imho. Hoult is the beneficiary of better connections ( Ford, Singer), not better talent. Clafin would be so much better as Bruce Wayne/Batman than Hoult, it's not even funny.I think he'd be the most physically impressive Batman since Bale. think the franchise dodged a bullet by not casting Hoult, as it would be akin to casting the kid who played Bruce Wayne in Gotham.

I did Clafin acts Irons off the screen anyway and the ensemble is pretty solid, so you kind of just accept Irons being there without too much hindrance.

I much prefer Hoult, if only on the strength of Mad Max: Fury Road and The Favourite. Claflin's got potential but he has yet to wow me, although The Nightingale is a promising role that could play into that potential.

The movie as a whole is actually better than I expected. The writing has a YA-ish vibe to it, but it goes to places I appreciate. It had very noble intentions. I thought it'd be one of those movies that glorifies/glamorizes self-entintlement and predatorial behavior by white, pretty boys. It was actually very, very critical and pretty spot-on, even if the writing itself wasn't that... hm... elegant? Anyways, it made me very angry and reminded me a lot of some recent real life events, but I think that was the point. I liked Clafin. His role wasn't as big as I thought it'd be, but it was a clever performance as in he starts playing the typical quiet boy we're used to root for, but then it turns out he's a massive prick, a classist, prejudiced asshole. It feels very natural, it's a cohesive performance. He does well when he has to go intense and loud. Still, I don't think it's something Hoult couldn't do, and it wasn't as good as his best performances. But it made me curious to see what else Clafin has in his sleeve. Should I watch Adrift next?

Still, I don't think it's something Hoult couldn't do, and it wasn't as good as his best performances. But it made me curious to see what else Clafin has in his sleeve. Should I watch Adrift next? The film was based on a stage play (called Posh) about the Bullingdon Club (an Oxford student society that produces lots of British Prime Ministers like David Cameron and likely-to-be-PM soon Boris Johnson). So the writing is about as subtle as a brick in it's condemnation of these spoiled, elite assholes that are bred to run a Nation (intersting, if sideways, commentary on democracy as well. It's hard to argue the UK is a truly egalitarian society, when these priviledged pricks keep inheriting the reigns of power). The writing wasn't subtle, but it did feel truthful and spot-on. Cohesive is a good way to describe Clafin's perfornance. He builds to it very well. I just think Clafin's physicality gives him an edge in these type of parts over Hoult. He's a big dude, and with six months in a gym could be built like a fucking tank. You see this performance and think, yeah....this guy can be Bruce Wayne/Batman. Hoult just skews younger as well. Adrift is more of a vehicle for Shaeline Woodley. Clafin is solid in it, but I feel he's sort of being wasted in vehicles like this. Guy is just moving in the wrong circles. He's the male equivalent to his Their Finest co-star Gemma Aterton. Really fine and consistent British film leading actors who seem to have little idea how to parlay the Hollywood game effectively. Then again, there has been a lot of rumours/gossip of Hoult being turned out on the casting couch, and not so for Clafin. So he's probably not willing to do anything for the brass ring. But I'd actually take him as Batman over both Pattinson and Hoult (though I think Pattinson will turn out well). Think Clafin could be a dark horse for the next 007 as well, but he needs to work to build up his profile, as every young-ish British actor in his age-range (and even older) seems to be campaigning for the role.

Hoult mainly because of his awesome performance in Mad Max Fury Road ("Oh what a day! What a lovely day!")

OT, but - just watched the film - can you believe that the actor who played the Greek member of the Riot Club, Ben Schnetzer, is American? His English accent was flawless...

I watched the Channel 4 miniseries Any Human Heart recently - one of Claflin's first roles. I wish he had been in the series much more than he actually was.

Ooof. They're very similar in their strengths. Unfortunately for Hoult, Claflin on Peaky Blinders trumps Hoult's work so far.

Hoult, and he should have easily been nominated for The Favourite.
