Remember the last Venice (and Toronto) film fest, in which every single possible Oscar contender was being hailed as a masterpiece?
I have gotten over critic reactions, man.

I've got a feeling Scarlett Johansson will win Best Actress. She definitely deserved it in 2013 for Under the Skin... We'll see! Under the Skin is one of my favourite films, she was brilliant in it.

Is it possible Marriage Story could win Actor and Actress and Supporting Actress. I think Johansson might have this but I was already predicting Driver and Dern It's possible because I think there's a path for all 3 to win, but I think realistically probably just two win. I can't decide which two though because they all have pros and cons. Dern - Pros: Supporting Actress doesn't look especially strong right now. Sounds like she has a killer monologue. A well liked veteran who will also get Globe and SAG attention for Big Little Lies which can't hurt. Cons: Still early, and you never know who might emerge in this category later. Feels like the two leads get most of the praise in reviews so far. Driver - Pros: Best Actor seems very competitive for the nomination, but imo, there doesn't seem to be a clear Stephen Hawking or Winston Churchill type of winning role. Well liked and often cited as one of the best actors of his generation. Top notch reviews so far seems likely to win at least one top tier critic award. Cons: With films like this it seems like they usually nominate/award the actress more. Also while Driver has gotten slightly more praise I feel, it seems like Johansson has a killer monologue that I think will give her the edge to win. Johansson - Pros: Unless someone new emerges from the expected Best Actress contenders, I feel that if Harriet is another Suffragette or something similar to that as some said after the trailer, I don't see Johansson losing at all. Survival type of films rarely win, and of course, there's whatever is going on with Amazon. Theron and Zellweger are previous winners, and it's very difficult to win a second especially if their films aren't nominated for Best Picture which seems doubtful, imo. I know Blanchett won a second, but she steamrolled the competition winning all the awards that year and Blue Jasmine was probably 10th. Plus, I feel like there was a feeling of her being overdue to win a leading actress award because of how highly respected she is in the industry. With Johansson, perhaps Awkwafina, and Haenel all having a better chance imo of winning the top tier awards, I don't see that kind of sweep in Theron or Zellweger's future. Cons: Will she be able to go through award season without saying anything dumb? It probably won't hurt her that much, but you never know. Also I'm not giving up on Harriet yet. Even if the film is meh, I think Erivo could still win; although, she seems to be having the same problem of not putting her foot in her mouth, lol.

Those reviews for Ad Astra are more in line with the twitter reactions that I read. I’m not sure where the consensus on twitter came from in regards to how the film was getting a bunch of negative buzz.

I’m not sure where the consensus on twitter came from in regards to how the film was getting a bunch of negative buzz. That's why I don't really put stock in "I heard X film is getting Y buzz" tweets, as they have no real basis and can easily be conjured up to stir up conversation. If they're proven right, they can nod sagely and go, "Yeah, I expected that." If they're proven wrong, it's just a rumor they heard and they don't have to be held accountable to it.

So basically Una 2.0, then: committed lead performance that carries an otherwise lackluster film. Happy to see Stewart getting praised, though.

J'Accuse reviews The Guardian - positive, "handsome and involving – a dogged procedural that exposes the institutionalised antisemitism of 1890s France." The Wrap - negative, says it "ticks off each story development in a rote and flatly uninteresting manner." The Hollywood Reporter - (surprisingly) positive, a "masterful technical work." Indiewire - negative, "a peevish and self-satisfied procedural." Variety - mixed-negative, "has the textured look and atmosphere of a luscious old-fashioned epic, and the first half of the movie sucks you right in, but after a while it starts to play like the dramatized version of a Wikipedia entry." Standard (UK) - high praise, "This film out-does Harris's own narrative in its profound immersion into the period. It's an absolute masterclass in how to make an historical film." ChicagoTribune - "It is a masterly period drama — Polanski’s best work since The Pianist." RogerEbert.com - Praises very highly, after some cringeworthy jokes and apologies; Polanski "handling a suspense narrative with Hitchcockian discipline and style."

Just imagine Polanski winning something here.

Reactions and reviews will be more subdued in their praise, for obvious reasons, but this film is the shit. My boy Jean Dujardin is magnificent and the film is almost quintessential Polanski, even with a more formal style, less claustrophobic than usual, visually.

It is ambitious and well intentioned, but it is heavy handed, full of overlong monologues and without any sense of mystery. A friend of mine defined it as “First Reformed” in space, and I kinda agree with that haha. That said, cinematography, sound and vfx are sensational.

That are four of my most wanted films to watch (with J'Accuse being the most anticipated of the year by far). And except for Ad Astra, which is supposed to start next month, it probably will take a very long time till I can watch them in my country.
